GOP's Ron Johnson responds to good news on vaccines with unhinged rant about hydroxychloroquine

President Joe Biden on Thursday night delivered good news on America's vaccination campaign, as he announced that every American should be eligible to sign up for a vaccine by May 1st.


Instead of celebrating this news, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) took to Twitter Friday to bitterly complain that Biden and the Centers for Disease Control had not embraced hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug that former President Donald Trump falsely claimed would be a "game changer" for treating COVID-19.

"Does Joe Biden wants (sic) us to continue living in a state of fear?" Johnson wrote. "This pandemic could have been defeated months ago & tens of thousands of lives saved if courageous frontline doctors and early treatment had not been censored and silenced as we awaited a vaccine."

However, multiple studies have found that hydroxychloroquine is not effective at treating COVID-19, and Trump himself was not treated with the drug when he was hospitalized after coming down with COVID-19 last October........................

The material on quinine drugs and their antiviral action was out there, just a little harder to find than logging on to FB. I quickly discovered that they'd known about the antiviral action for decades but that it was dosage dependent, meaning if they fed people enough of the stuff to suppress viral replication, they ran into things like cardiac dysrhythmias and kidney problems. I came across in vitro studies in the 50s and again in the 80s. In vitro (in the lab) doesn't often translate to working in people.

However, Dumdum and his investor class forced hospitals to reinvent the wheel and I'm sure a few people died who wouldn't have if only they'd been given standard treatment, which at the time wasn't great but didn't kill them outright.

I hope right wing fast buck artists got hosed, it serves them right. I just wish Dumdum would face consequences for trumpeting that shit before any scientific investigation including a documents search had been done. Sadly, he'll skate on that one. People also listened to that asshole and a few died taking aquarium cleaner tablets that contained chloroquine.

What Johnson can't seem to admit is that it's his own fault for taking medical and investment advice from a medically ignorant blowhard.

(We paid for those doses, of course, who else? Perhaps they can be donated to anti malarial efforts in the developing world)
