Lindsey Graham threatens to "talk until I fell over" to stop LGBTQ civil rights bill from passing
Source: LGBTQ Nation
Sen. Graham said he will stop at nothing to stop the Equality Act.
By Alex Bollinger Thursday, March 18, 2021
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that he will filibuster till I fall over to prevent the Equality Act from becoming law on Sean Hannitys Fox News show last night.
I would talk until I fell over to make sure that the Equality Act doesnt become law, destroying the difference between men and women, Graham said with a look of determination.
The Equality Act, which would expand existing federal civil rights protections to include LGBTQ people, passed the House last month and the Senate is now considering it. While Democrats hold a slim majority 50 senators plus the tie-breaking vice presidential vote under current Senate rules 60 votes are required to end a filibuster so that the chamber can vote on a bill.
This means that LGBTQ advocates have to find 10 Republicans to vote to end the debate on the Equality Act, or Senate Democrats have to end or restrict the filibuster.

(7,942 posts)This is typical Repub "politics of exclusion" or the belief that everything is zero-sum.
Essentially they would rather bluster their easy, black and white argument, which is always in terms of: if someone gains rights, someone else has to lose rights, which is ridiculous. They do this with gay marriage too, saying it would "destroy the sanctity" when in reality gay marriage does not affect heterosexual marriage one bit.
Where Democrats generally wish to welcome everyone under the same tent, the Repubs try to get their way by insisting that adding someone else in the tent means someone else has to leave - because they'd rather exclude than get along with ideas they don't agree with. They'd rather join an exclusive club instead of figuring out how everyone might benefit.

(42,862 posts)Land! Brace yourselves for another hissy fit. He's going to clinch his fists and stomp his way up the marble stairs in his brand new, high-gloss, patent leather shoes. Click click click! Lordy mercy! It does appear to me that the delicately mannered Southern Gentleman from South Carolina is so angry that he might even work up a sweat and make his forehead glisten.
Temper-temper! As soon as he gets home, he'll storm off to his room, slam the door behind him. Next, he'll hop up on his sister's canopy bed and start yanking the heads off of all her dollies. He gets mean and destructive when he's mad.
Good grief! Just listen to him trying to talk tough! What a joke! Everyone knows he's just a spoiled little boy trying to convince the world he's some sort of macho man... a real he-man... but inside, he's a temperamental child... a privileged brat... living a very sheltered overly-protected life. He answers to nobody and thinks he can get away with anything.
Perhaps that's true... he gets away with a lot... for now. But surely that can't last forever. It's only a matter of time before his luck runs out. Tick-tock, Lindsey G. Tick. Tock.

I imagine his childhood house looks like this.

(540 posts)Prefacing this by saying I do not know if Graham is gay or not. I do not care. But if he is I can guarantee after he retires from public office he will come out but while in he votes against his own people. A lot of gay GOPrs over years did the exact same thing.

(10,915 posts)... of course there are differences between men and women, and they are wonderfully unique. What does Lindsey Graham think that has to do with equal rights? Equal rights for everyone doesn't change men and woman... all the difference he expects will still be there.

Even friends with relatives who are Republicans tell them that Graham needs to shut the hell up about gay rights period, because he doesn't need to be talking about that because "we all know about him." That's what they said.

(3,658 posts)I haven't read the legislation in its entirety. But Republicans need to be more forthright and list those elements of bills they disagree with and make their case against it. Just saying you're voting against it because it "destroys the differences between men and women" is over-the-top rhetoric that adds nothing to the debate.
The man is a total LGBT-phobic pig.

(7,994 posts)your self-loathing is absolutely breathtaking. I don't know, and really don't care if you're gay, bisexual, asexual or whatever you are. But you're in the forefront of this effort to deny other people their basic Constitutional rights and it's shameful. How does a party that claims to believe in smaller government square itself with giving a tinker's damn about who someone else loves? Are you just interested in the mechanics?

(12,327 posts)Its going to dredge up trauma from DADT, DOMA, and so many other instances where LGBTQ Americans are treated as lesser than. I have experienced discrimination so many times over my life, and am still in fear when I visit my parents in the small town that Im from. When I open my mouth, I speak in rainbow colors.
The Equality Act should be a no-brainer. Opposing it on the grounds of a culture war is all the GOP has. LGBTQ youth will suffer because of this debate. Homelessness of gay teens will increase.
Im glad Biden is president. I hope Manchin and Sinema recognize our common humanity and relax the filibuster rules for this important legislation.
