Nearly 40,000 fans sit side-by-side at Texas Rangers home opener

ARLINGTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In what can be considered a first for major league sports in the U.S. during the pandemic, the Texas Rangers held their home opener Monday allowing a full-capacity crowd to sit side-by-side.
Due to the state of Texas lifting last month coronavirus protections, including those limiting capacity at businesses and doing away with a mask mandate, the Rangers were able to open their 1-year-old Globe Life Field venue to the full 40,000-fan capacity.
ABC News reports fewer than 1,000 tickets were still available for the Rangers' series-opening game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
There were some rules and protections put into place. Fans were told to wear masks unless eating or drinking. Concessions are cashless, and staff were told to clean surfaces as often as possible.
Still, images taken from inside the ballpark and during the game's regional telecast showed many fans not eating or drinking opting not to wear masks.

...I don't want to get sick again & go to the hospital...That sucks far more than wearing a mask. I guess
some people are so stupid that they don't know what stupid is....Going to a large crowd and sitting
next to many people is not smart...Is it?...Not just any old large crowd, but 38,000 people...Is that large enough?........................................................................
..........................And look at the picture. Not many with masks..Is that correct?

I don't tempt Fate. You can't see your cards and it never shows it's hand, unless it's Aces.
Is it so difficult to wear a damn mask and watch this crap on TeeVee?

And then there are the ones wearing gators, which have been well publicized as being ineffective.
RE StuartG's comment above, I think he has a point.
I have never had a serious illness nor have I been in the hospital. However, I do have a pretty good imagination and I also make it a point to learn from the mistakes of other people. Is there a one of us who hasn't seen the hospitalized Covid patient on the news, appealing to the public to wear a mask and to take this disease seriously?

(19,897 posts)someone infected with Covid is sitting on wither side of you or behind you, and they sneeze, the aerosol can get in your nasal passage, eyes, mouth.
I think this was a dumb move. The Rangers could have said 40% capacity and 2-3 seats between each person.

(42,661 posts)I can't think of a sporting event worth risking spending any time on a ventilator, but that's just me.
Stuart G
(38,454 posts).....When you spend a lot of time on a ............"ventilator"...as many of us have..due to illness, surgery, accidents, or
whatever, it changes one's perspective on life....Thank you ....tanyev... for your post...and exceptional analysis of
the risk of going to a very crowded sporting event...I am not going, and most of us at DU aren't going either...

Even at a 20% vaccination rate this super spreader event exceeds the Tulsa Rally last Summer by 30 or 35x.

(11,530 posts)MLB Commissioner Manfred screwed up royally by allowing this happen.
He also didn't handle the All Star game decision very well. While I of course totally support to move the game out of Atlanta he was silent on this issue until after Georgia passed the voter suppression law. He should have been making public statements before the Georgia GOPers voted for voter suppression.
