Tiger Woods Was Driving About 85 M.P.H. in a 45 M.P.H. Zone When He Crashed

Source: New York Times

Tiger Woods was driving about 40 miles per hour over the speed limit when he crashed a sport-utility vehicle in February, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Woods was traveling between 84 and 87 miles per hour in a 45 m.p.h. zone, Villanueva said at a news conference Wednesday. His car was traveling at an estimated 75 m.p.h. when it struck a tree. “The primary causal factor for the collision was driving at an unsafe speed for the road conditions and being unable to negotiate the curve,” said Villanueva.

Woods was not cited for driving too fast and no criminal charges will be filed, Villanueva said. He added that there were no signs of impairment or intoxication, and that Woods was wearing his seatbelt. The captain of the Lomita Sheriff’s Station, James Powers, said that data was obtained from the vehicle’s event data recorder, known colloquially as the black box. The data showed that Woods had hit the accelerator throughout the crash, and that the pressure applied to the pedal was 99 percent. Powers said he believed that Woods inadvertently hit the accelerator while trying to brake. Woods has no recollection of the collision, and there were no witnesses to the crash.

Woods was not cited, Villanueva said, because under California law that typically requires either an independent witness or a law enforcement officer to witness the excessive speed. He said that Woods did not receive any special treatment, and nobody would be cited for speeding in a solo vehicle collision without any witnesses. Woods had to be extracted from his S.U.V. after the crash on the morning of Feb. 23 and taken to the hospital, where he underwent several surgeries on his right leg. Doctors not involved in Woods’s care have predicted an extremely difficult recovery from his injuries.

Woods crashed his car on a windy and tricky stretch of Hawthorne Boulevard that is known for car crashes near Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal city in Los Angeles County. According to data collected by the sheriff’s department, there were 13 crashes, four with injuries, from Jan. 3, 2020, to Feb. 23 of this year within a 1.35-mile stretch of Hawthorne Boulevard that includes the site where Woods crashed. That stretch of road is also known for speeding. Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, the first emergency responder to arrive at the scene, said at a news conference in February that he had sometimes seen vehicles going more than 80 miles per hour on Hawthorne Boulevard.

26. Tiger didn't care about endangering others...He only cared about ....himself...

...If Tiger cared about anyone else at all...it would not have been 85, would have been 60 or 65 at most..
Yes, going a little over the limit allows for mistakes and other kinds of errors..
....But going 85 in a 45 zone, just shows total self involvement, and total stupidity...a curving road?...Why speed limit of 45 mph and not higher?.... Tiger didn't give a s**t, because he needed to ..
do what he wanted to do..

......Why?....because he is special....he is TIGER WOODS!!!

9. Since accidents and too much speed are common in that stretch of road...

seems the county should re-engineer it to curb the speed of traffic. A steep, downhill grade and a sweeping curve is just about a recipe for gaining too much speed to drivers unfamiliar with the road.

....If it is a two lane road, (and I don't know) ....than Woods was very stupid..>>YES, VERY VERY STUPID
....If it was a four lane divided highway, well what was the speed limit at 45 for?

........My guess is ...it was 2 lanes, not divided and that is why 45 was the limit....Tiger has no excuse if that is it.
.......But I honestly don't know the facts...........just the facts.!!!

It's on a steep, sweeping curve, easy to gain speed by drivers not familiar with the road.

In my neighborhood there's a downhill grade from the road being built over a freeway and cops hangout tucked away in a cul-de-sac to catch "speeders" coming down the hill. Those of us familiar with the road and the speed trap always take our foot off the gas when coming down the hill as we know to watch out for the motorcycle cop lurking. They always get someone though who doesn't live in the area.

My point being it's easy to pick up speed on steep, downhill grades.

that stretch of road. It probably needs to be looked at by the county as to how to slow down the traffic speed. Woods is not the only one that has had an accident there.

Hey, no sweat, officer, it isn't my car. The company that sponsors the golf tournament hands the keys out to golfers and other celebrities. See their logo on the side of the door? That logo, upside down on a crunched door, will be shown many many times on national television. The sponsor is getting enormous amounts of publicity, and all for the cost of insuring a courtesy car.

It's all good.

I'm not getting a ticket or anything, right?

I use the term servitude as I hate the term "community service', I am far from pro punitive judicial punishments but this spoiled brat needs to work out his issues and slow down both figuratively and literally. Driving double the speed limit is a crime not just a traffic offence in may locations.

38. Speed cameras. Speed activated traffic lights.

There's a stretch of road here in the DC area that has speed activated traffic lights. The lights are at intersections and function as one would expect a traffic light to do. But when cars are detected speeding, the light will turn red EVEN THOUGH NO CARS ARE AT THE INTERSECTION.

When everyone behaves, traffic flows smoothly. When there's a speeder, he (and everyone behind him) must come to a 15-second stop before being allowed to proceed.

why should we expect them to obey the traffic lights?

I think the best incentive would be damage to the vehicles they love so much more than the safety of those around them.

52. Hate hate hate...

Sure, he was speeding, as we all do from time to time. I believe he may have learned a lesson from his actions - he was seriously injured. I'm also very grateful that noone else was hurt and that's a really good thing.

But hate? Just because he's famous? Think about all of the non-famous people who have driven too fast on a road. I see flowers and memorials erected for people who have lost their lives along the roadways. I also see how people drive. The insanity is run-amok on the highway.

Accidents happen, especially to those drivers who may be driving too fast, or talking on their cell phones, or texting, or eating, OR PUTTING MAKEUP ON. I was rear-ended several years ago by a woman who was putting her makeup on. I was setting idle at a traffic stop when she hit me. She didn't even slow down. Luckily noone was hurt there either.

I once rolled a Jeep while doing 4 MPH. Yes, that's correct - 4 MPH. I guess I was driving way too fast for the conditions.

Accidents happen. To both stupid and not so stupid people.
