Raul Castro is stepping down as the head of the Communist Party of Cuba, the most powerful position on the island, with few expectations of significant change among Cubans, despite it being a historic move.
The Communist Partys eighth congress will begin Friday when it will certify President Miguel Díaz-Canel as the next party secretary-general and set policy guidelines. Castro said in 2018 he expected Díaz-Canel to replace him after his retirement in 2021. He, and his late brother Fidel, have been in power since the 1959 revolution. Díaz-Canel, 60, represents a new generation and is serving the first of two five-year terms as president.
Many analysts believe Castro, who turns 90 in June, will continue being the most influential figure on the island until his death.
In Cuba major events are put together during historic celebrations and this years congress is no exception. It coincides with the 60th anniversary of the failed, CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion.

Honestly, things are changing in Cuba for the better and I'm convinced that reopening relations with Cuba will be a big help. I visited Cuba a couple of years ago to see it for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find that locals would openly discuss politics and their country's relationship with the US.

(36,177 posts)I had the same experience, and saw that it was true, that the solidarity-level socialism in Cuba isn't like communism -- that Cuba's congress and its people accept those evolving 'versions.' Both, however, are anti-fascist in the Batista mafia style of fascism (the Batista Cubans of Miami) which is Trumpism and Rubio. They're glad to be rid of the Miami Cubans.
