Distributors' 'mountain of opioid pills' fueled epidemic, W.Virginia judge told

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) -A city and county in West Virginia launched their case against the three largest U.S. drug distributors at a widely anticipated trial on Monday, accusing them of fueling the opioid crisis that has resulted in nearly 500,000 overdose deaths in the United States over two decades.

"We intend to prove the simple truth that the distributor defendants sold a mountain of opioid pills into our community, fueling the opioid epidemic," Paul Farrell, a lawyer for Cabell County, said in his opening statement in Charleston, West Virginia.

"The pain, death and destruction to our community cannot be overstated," said Anne Kearse, a lawyer for the city of Huntington.

Lawyers for the distributors - AmerisourceBergen Corp, McKesson Corp and Cardinal Health Inc - are expected to give their opening statements later on Monday.

in a frightening and in-depth expose of the OxyContin company (Purdue), then read Empire of Pain. It's a stunning view into a thoroughly amoral and greedy family. And they have gotten away with it all - their billions of dollars squirreled away in off shore accounts. It reads like a novel and has a lot of personal anecdotes on the whole Sackler family.

I recommend it.

But part of the reason they got away with the philanthropy is because they kept the Sackler name far away from the business and the dangerous pills they were pushing. Once people started to realize who was behind the opioid epidemic, the recipients began to take the Sackler name off of everything.

Goddam all pushers.

The Pusher
Steppenwolf

You know I've smoked a lot of grass
O' Lord, I've popped a lot of pills
But I've never touched nothin'
That my spirit could kill
You know, I've seen a lot of people walkin' 'round
With tombstones in their eyes
But the pusher don't care
Ah, if you live or if you die
God damn, The Pusher
God damn, I say The Pusher
I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man
You know the dealer, the dealer is a man
With the love grass in his hand
Oh but the pusher is a monster
Good God, he's not a natural man
The dealer for a nickel
Lord, he'll sell you lots of sweet dreams
Ah, but the pusher ruin your body
Lord, he'll leave your, he'll leave your mind to scream
God damn, The Pusher
God damn, God damn the Pusher
I said God damn, God, God…

there are people in prison in WV who sold a baggie of pills, yet the owners/executives of the companies that distributed hundreds of thousands of pills to small towns in WV will never see the inside of a prison. Rich privilege at its finest.

How the fuck is a distributor responsible?

Its like the doctors don't even exist.

The tort system is totally broken.
