PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Incumbent candidate Bill Peduto has unexpectedly conceded the Democratic primary election for Pittsburgh Mayor to State Rep. Ed Gainey late Tuesday night.

“I just called @gainey_ed and congratulated him on earning the Democratic endorsement for Mayor of the city of Pittsburgh. Wishing him well. Thank you Pittsburgh for the honor of being your Mayor these past 8 years. I will remain forever grateful,” Peduto wrote on Twitter.

I don't live in the city, but he's done a good job running things. He's one of the good guys.

Gainey has secured more than 44% of the vote in a four-way race. Peduto currently has about 41%, former Pittsburgh Police officer Tony Moreno has 13%, and Michael Thompson, a math tutor and ride hail driver, has about 1%. As the in-person votes have trickled in, Gainey has continued to grow his lead.

It's not just the upset in the Democratic mayoral primary, it's also the huge battle in the Court of Common Pleas, and five members from the reformist Slate of Eight are on their way to victory. In addition, there were big ballot initiatives in Pittsburgh and across the state, and the base was fired up today. The good weather also helped.

I don't have any insider info, but I live in the City of Pittsburgh and I thought Peduto was doing a good job. Just reading through comments placed on Reddit (the Pittsburgh sub-thread) this morning and a lot young Pittsburghers randomly posted their comments.

Example : "I voted for Gainey but I didn't think he could win. It was just a protest vote against Peduto." Also the city has a black population that votes Dem in big numbers every year.
