State museum canceled book event examining slavery's role in Battle of the Alamo after Texas GOP lea

Source: Texas Tribune

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick confirmed on Twitter that he called for the event to be canceled. Abbott, Patrick and other GOP leaders are board members of the State Preservation Board, which oversees the Bullock museum.

A promotional event for a book examining the role slavery played leading up to the Battle of the Alamo that was scheduled at the Bullock Texas State History Museum on Thursday evening was abruptly canceled three and a half hours before it was scheduled to begin.

Authors of the book, titled “Forget the Alamo,” and the publisher, Penguin Random House, say the cancellation of the event, which had 300 RSVPs, amounts to censorship from Republican elected leaders and an overreaction to the book’s examination of racism in Texas history.

“The Bullock was receiving increased pressure on social media about hosting the event, as well as to the museum’s board of directors (Gov Abbott being one of them) and decided to pull out as a co-host all together,” Penguin Random House said in a statement.

In order to move and live in Mexico, Santa Anna required Americans to do three things:

1: Learn Spanish
2: Become Mexican citizens
3: Become Catholic

Why?

1: Spanish is/was the national language and nothing was in English
3: Being Catholic was the state religion.

I leave #2 for last:

2: Becoming Mexican citizens meant you must follow all Mexican laws. Mexico outlawed slavery in the 1820s. Most of the people going to Texas were from the South. One of the famous, Davy Crockett, was from Tennessee. So, if they became Mexican citizens, they had to give up their slaves. And the Americans that moved there refused to do that.

Also, a lot of the American moving there were illegal immigrants, so Santa Anna closed the border. Americans ignored it, still came, violated Mexican law, continued owning slaves, which meant that Santa Anna had to send in the army to enforce the law. . .and the Americans launched a rebellion against him.

This is the verified history of the Texas War.

And Santa Anna was not a great person and honestly a poor leader. He was deeply, deeply flawed and has an ambivalent reputation in Mexico.
Your point about Texas fighting to preserve slavery stands. But the Texas colonisation project was established by the Mexican government knowing full well that enforcement of requirements was going to be tricky at best. It was understood that enslaved people were part of the deal, but putting a buffer population in Texas was viewed to be one potential way of gaining some sort of control over this region. It failed spectacularly and is one of the nails in the coffin of Mexico's political apparatus during this time.

They are pulling out all stops to retain power. Texas will be the front line on election tampering next election. Our leaders are going as far right as possible to keep their base fired up and keep Dems from voting.
