At least 150 people fatally shot in more than 400 shootings over the Fourth of July weekend
Source: CNN
At least 150 people were killed by gun violence in more than 400 shootings across the country during the Fourth of July weekend as major cities nationwide confront a surge in violent crime, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.
The data, which includes the number of shooting incidents and gun violence victims nationally over a 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday, is still evolving and will be updated.
In New York, where gun violence has been rising to levels not seen in years, there were 26 victims from 21 shootings from Friday to Sunday, a decrease from the same period last year when 30 people were shot in 25 shootings, the New York Police Department said.
On July 4, the city experienced 12 shooting incidents that involved 13 victims, an increase from last year when there were eight shootings and eight victims, according to the NYPD.

The story goes on to detail mass shootings that happened all over the country. This is just fucking crazy, and sadly has become the new normal.

(10,014 posts)in NYC and Chicago care about the 2nd Amendment? I would guess that most of them are criminals or too ignorant of the law to know about any amendments.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)back in the old west they knew how bad it could get and many frontier towns were pretty strict about parking your artillery with the local marshal.
Now, we're stupidly allowing more and more people to walk around armed and ready for battle. Most of them won't actually shoot, but it's just nuts to be making that the norm.

(2,971 posts)executing people, but all right...we'll go with that.
Scenario: A couple of hundred right-wing lunatics show up in Podunk, California, and announce that they're in charge. Local law enforcemaent tries to intervene, and in the ensuing gun battle all of the police are killed, along with a bunch of civililans and a couple dozen of the lunatics. Vowing revenge, they begin executing the people in the town one by one.
But there's a hitch in their fiendish plan: Because of things such as the internet and cell phones, news of what's happening is being livestreamed across the globe. Within a handful of minutes, a state of emergency is declared. Within hours, SWAT teams in armored vechicles are descending upon the hapless lunatics. By day's end, all of them have either been killed, greviously wounded, or have surrendered.
That's my take. What do you think would happen?

(2,971 posts)in more restrictions, given the current makeup of the Court. If anything, they'll likely expand gun rights further.
Things may well be different further in the future, but for now, the likelihood of significant restrictions getting past the SC seems quite small.

The fuss was that investigators ran out of markers for shell casings and fragments and had to use hand-made ones (amounting to 105+ locations around the grounds and in the vicinity of the shots).

(14,559 posts)beginning in 2014 the murder rate began an alarming increase that has continued ever since. Like a 20% increase in the rate of people per 100,000. Please note the increase in RATE, not pure numbers. Should this increase in rate continue it will only be a few more years before the current N/100,00 matches or exceeds that of 1990.
Ironically the other crimes; robbery, sexual assault etc remain at all time lows. Only murder, mostly with guns, is suddenly growing.

(128,905 posts)Guns have poured into the cities like crack did in the '90s, and are often used to "settle (social media) scores" and/or are part of drug-related turf battles. Many of them are even found to be ghost guns assembled from kits and thus are without serial numbers, and are untraceable. I know here in Philly, they have noted that as soon as they pull hundreds of illegal guns off the streets, they are quickly replaced.

For many teenage boys, this is their first summer with a Semi-Automatic Pistol, and they're full of piss and vinegar, and any coping skills they once had have been degraded by social isolation.
Maybe these incidents would have been simple fistfights years ago, but the nation is absolutely saturated in firearms now.
