American Airlines cancels flight after teens refuse to wear masks

Source: MSN

American Airlines was forced to cancel a flight from North Carolina to the Bahamas after a group of 30 teenagers refused to wear face masks - and they were then forced to sleep in the airport overnight because they were too young to check into a hotel.

Flight 893 was scheduled to depart from Charlotte Douglas International Airport enroute to Nassau on Monday when passengers say the group of teens from Boston started being 'very obnoxious'.

Fellow passengers say the group, aged 17 and 18, refused to wear their masks as required.

The group were believed to be on their way to the Bahamas for a graduation trip.

Why should any of us have to put up with those who think they can do whatever the F**K! they want.

What we will end up with is MORE like the TFG who thinks he or she is entitled to do whatever they please. How has that worked out for us?

I was ready to crucify the kids until I found out AA once again had “mechanical issues” and left the kids on the tarmac for two hours in Charlotte heat and humidity with NO air conditioning.

So the kids took their masks off and told AA to get bent. I have to fly AA for work - I hate them. I prefer United. AA sucks and is always rated the lowest of the major airlines

Jul 2021

My son, his wife, and their two-year-old flew about a month ago. It was a pleasure trip, so I wasn't really happy that they were going during the pandemic, but it wasn't my decision. They started working on getting her adjusted to wear a mask about a month ahead of time. She did pretty good, but she definitely wasn't always in compliance. Fortunately they didn't get kicked off any of their flights. Even more fortunately, she didn't get sick. I was much more worried about that last possible scenario than about them getting kicked off of a flight.

I wonder if it's other passengers complaining in a lot of these cases of toddlers getting kicked off. My son said that on the way back my granddaughter hardly had her mask on at all and nobody said anything. On top of that, she was very grumpy. It was a pretty big trip for a two-year-old. On about the 8th day she said she wanted to go home. She missed her toys and her room and her routine. I could have told them that was going to happen, but I kept my mouth shut so they could learn their own lessons.

I don't know what to think about the age of required mask wearing. But listening to that guy lie pissed me off.

Edit: He never even tried to get her to wear it because it wasn't bent at all. At least he could have seen if she could handle it. He couldn't have made it into a game or something. And I don't know when this was and/or if people had access to vaccinations at that point.

It was the first video that popped up. It probably wasn't the best example.

As I said up above, my son and his wife started working with their two year old about a month before they flew. She was pretty good about keeping her mask on at the beginning of their trip, but by the time the return trip rolled around, she was not a happy camper about it.

I thought they were being very ambitious with their vacation plans, but I learned a long time ago to just enjoy the grandkids and keep my unasked-for-advice to myself, so I kept my mouth shut.

Editing to add: They actually invited me to go with them, and I knew it was best to decline.

... a mask. That includes anyone who gets on a plane wearing a mask then takes it off once in the air. That would make sure no other passenger would have to deal with having to sit with those maskless idiots in the future.

That is why I will not fly until a universal set of rules are in place that ensures my safety.

Put them on the no-fly list. Immediately. If they are sure they will not be able to book a return flight MAYBE they will follow the safety rules to protect others.

What is this country headed for if 17-year-olds think that NO law or rules apply to them? Enough already!

They shouldn't have gotten to fly the next day either, but they did. Hopefully they learned that there are consequences for actions.

I've watched videos about passengers who can't seem to figure out how to behave properly, and it seems that the airlines generally just move them to the next available flight. Maybe if the consequences of the bad behavior were a little more severe, we wouldn't have so many people thinking they can do whatever the hell they want.

............All passengers, including the ones who caused the initial disruption, were rebooked onto the new flight after they agreed to wear their face masks.

Those on the flight were given hotel and meal vouchers while they waited for the new flight.

The teens, however, were unable to check in to a hotel due to age requirements and had to sleep in the airport instead.

Prior to the mask incident unfolding, the aircraft had experienced technical difficulties, which meant all passengers had to change planes and were already delayed.

The little shits couldn't be booked in a hotel because of their ages. They had to sleep in the airport itself. I'm sure once they got bored of vandalizing the restrooms it was a long night.

I feel sorry for the twenty percent or so of the kids who, according to witnesses, weren't causing trouble, and for the rest of the passengers who got screwed over. Hopefully the punks will get what they deserve when they arrive back home, but trump trash are already declaring them Heroes of the Revolution (because the rotten little turds didn't cause them problems) in various forums.

Most hotels won’t let you book at 18.

They assume you’re gonna party and trash the place.

It was an issue when I had to send my oldest off to a college event. Because he was traveling to the other coast we had to send him the day prior because the start time was early enough that he wouldn’t have made it by flying the same day.

After numerous calls, we finally found one small hotel that would allow him a room. And this wasn’t a small city either - it was Pittsburgh.

(Campus housing wasn’t available that early)

American Airlines flight AA893 from Charlotte to Nassau went mechanical on Monday, and the airline switched aircraft to get passengers on their way. Already delayed several hours, tensions were running high. And a group of high school students on board chose the moment they were on their second aircraft, ready to depart, to stage a mask protest that “lasted for hours.”

Winer said the passengers of flight 893 bound for the Bahamas sat on the aircraft in Charlotte for about two hours awaiting resolution of a mechanical issue with the flight, and "during this time some passengers including the students may have removed masks due to no air-conditioning/ventilation, quite unbearable conditions."

So, they let the kids bake on a hot tarmac with no AC for two hours and the kids took their masks off. If this is true, why didn’t AA deplane them?

The other passengers shouldn't have to be punished because a bunch of masshole parents in Boston don't know how to raise children.

Then ban each of those kids from all flights on all airlines for the next five years. Let their families feel the sting of their failure to raise human beings or let the kids feel the sting of not listening to their moral instruction if they had it. Fuck 'em.

I have no tolerance for misbehavior on an airplane or any other place where people are in tight quarters and a level of civility is required to ensure quality for everyone.

They never actually said the flight was delayed because of the obnoxious teens. It sounds like it was an airplane problem that caused the delays, and the group was being obnoxious during the delay.

That would explain the vouchers and reticketing.

The flight wasn't held up because of jerks, but the jerks were pissing everyone else off during the delay.

Still, the airline should have dropped the hammer on them. No doubt parents lawyers were on the phone with the airline threatening them.

Maybe they should have their tickets canceled while in the bahamas. Let them deal with the bahamian gov't. Mommy can charter a plane to bring them home.

They never actually said why the flight was canceled. Airlines are pretty quick about getting cops on board to declare unruly passengers.

I've flown a LOT. It is far more likely the second flight got a ground hold which delayed it long enough that the crew expired.

I've had an uncounted number of flights canceled because of expired crews. They can only work so many hours in a day, and if they won't land before that limit they can't take off.

It's likely aa didn't have another crew that night so the flight got canceled.

The jerks just made matters worse.

Even the best and most engaged parent can end up with a pain in the ass kid, especially in the teen years. I knew kids growing up whose parents were perfectly normal people who taught them right from wrong, but then the "rebellious teen" switch got flipped. Most of them had grown out of it by the time we graduated high school, though. Still, punishing parents for the behavior of their kids isn't something I'd support, especially for the ones who were 18 and therefore legal adults.

Now if the parent defended their precious punkin and maintained that they'd done nothing wrong, then they can share in the kid's punishment. If that had been my kid, I'd have been like, "Guess who's not going to the Bahamas? That's right, pal, it's you. Bring your silly ass home. By the way, your summer vacation is going to be significantly less fun than you imagined."

A guy sitting ahead of me on the other side of the plane had a mask on his neck, in spite of the constant recored reminders of mandatory masking. He was probably in my age group. The attendants looked like they were early 20's. He was reminded at least twice to cover his face, and he complied. As soon as the attendant went on their way, he dropped it down again. I didn't see anyone else being so stupid. I would've been happy to see him booted or for the flight to be cancelled.

It was a drive of almost 2 hours to get to the airport, and then about 5 hours in terminals and planes, then almost another hour of driving. I wore my mask the whole freaking time.

We flew last summer and had a long stop at the Charlotte airport. AA did not enforce masking in their planes, ticketing areas, anywhere in the hub. We complained to TSA and were told to talk to AA. We complained to AA and they said to talk to airport admin. Airport admin told us to call the Charlotte police. It was ridiculous.

The teens should definitely face/have faced consequences, but AA is hardly a beacon of compliance here.

If my flight got cancelled because a group of selfish people (regardless of age) decided to pull a stunt like this, I'd be pretty hacked off - especially if I was headed to a funeral, a job interview, a wedding, or anything else like that.

For what it's worth, having a group like this chaperoned doesn't always make a difference -

I was once on a transatlantic flight from Europe that was almost cancelled because of a group of teenagers. They were American teens presumably on their way back to the US after some sort of group trip, and they were very, very excited. They simply wouldn't shut up, and none of them seems to have ever learned what an "indoor voice" is.

Before we boarded, I personally asked their chaperone (teacher?) if she could get them to cool off. I'm hearing-impaired, and their noise made it impossible for me to hear announcements. (I would imagine even passengers with full hearing also found it difficult.) She mumbled something about how kids are going to be kids, but that she'd try. If she did, it made no impact.

(For the record - I know teens get excited when they travel. I was once such a teen. Heck, I still get excited, depending on where I'm going. But excitement crosses a line when it interferes with other passengers' efforts to hear announcements or sleep on the plane.)

We were allowed to proceed only because the chaperone assured the gate agents and flight attendants that the teens would behave once they got on the plane.

That lasted until a few minutes after takeoff. To this good day, I don't know why the plane wasn't diverted so these passengers could be taken off.

And the punch line? They were all seated toward the back of the plane (a Boeing 777, IIRC) and were facing a tight connection - so once we landed, their chaperone asked them, loudly enough for the rest of us to hear, to "start working your way forward." The chaperone was literally telling them to start cutting in front of other passengers, many of whom (including me) also had tight connections.

The teens started to do this, but they didn't get far. No one on the plane seemed inclined to make way for them.

No idea if they made their connection.

I really, really hope they didn't behave like that in Europe.

Had the flight been cancelled or delayed because of this poorly-led group, I'd have done something to hold them and ESPECIALLY their chaperone accountable.

I watched the video of the woman speaking and she stated the students had been removed. The photo of the young man behind her was taken as she stated the students had been removed, I took that to mean he wasn’t part of the group of students.

The photo of the black man with dreads(Malik, unsure of last name) stated he was sitting close to the students, wasn’t a part of the group.

The plane used on this route is a Boeing 737-800, which seats 160. Because of 30 infants with pubic hair, 130 people had to call their Bahamas hotels, rental car agencies, airport shuttles, and whatever else they had reserved down there and try to talk them out of cancelling their reservations and keeping their money.

I take it having the airport police escort these little brats off the jet and allowing the 130 mask-compliant pax to proceed to their destination was out of the question.

Remember - being on an airplane isn't like being in an open air market or socially-distanced restaurant. You're in a sealed space with 8 or so people less than 6-feet away from you...for hours. Then, there's the health and safety of the flight attendants to consider.

Wed Jul 7, 2021, 01:41 PM
Jul 2021

Some teens are just born that way, others are raised to be jerks and fools.

What is surprising is that, after the terrible inconvenience they caused to other paying customers, they were allowed on another flight. Causing a flight to cancel because of your a-hole behavior is not the same as throwing spitballs in class. What am I missing here?

Maybe the airline couldn’t identify the maskless idiots quickly and so couldn’t just condemn the whole group out of hand? No, sorry, yes the airline could condemn the whole group out of hand. Simply by interviewing each kid individually and asking them to identify the perps. If you don’t identify the perps, you don’t fly. Meanwhile, review videos to make a separate ID of the a-holes and target them individually for the no-fly list.

But don’t just make them wait for the next flight as if their criminality was just, "like, so cool, man, lmfao!"

Will some rich kid Daddies sue? Fine. Bring it on. Let a jury decide what was more important: some rich kids criminal fun or the safety of the other passengers on the flight.

I can't remember where to--out west, like AZ, I think.

He bought a book in the airport bookstore to read, a thriller with scary stuff on the cover. He wasn't allowed to fly because he might be a terrorist. He went home and came back the next day with a Harry Potter book. Security remembered him and wouldn't let him on the plane. I can't remember how it ended up, if he ever got to join his family or not.

I find it hard to believe that no adults were on this trip. But even if that's true, parents were still involved because airline tickets can only be purchased via credit card any more. If 18 kids went on the trip then 18 sets of parents paid for their tickets and probably everything else included.

You don't send your underage kid to a foreign country unchaperoned in this day and age. Especially after all the stories of abductions, kidnappings, murders, and robberies on foreign soil.
