Twitter Suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene for Posting Coronavirus Misinformation

Source: New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter said on Monday that it was suspending Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from its service for 12 hours after she posted messages that violated its policy against sharing misleading information about the coronavirus.

Ms. Greene, a Republican of Georgia, has been an outspoken opponent of vaccines and masks as tools to curb the pandemic. In tweets on Sunday and Monday, she argued that Covid-19 was not dangerous for people under the age of 65 who are not obese, and said vaccines should not be required.

But cases of the coronavirus are on the rise, and the highly contagious Delta variant accounts for more than half of new infections in the United States, federal health officials said this month. In Ms. Greene’s home state, Georgia, new cases have increased 193 percent in the past two weeks.

Twitter said Ms. Greene’s tweets were misinformation, and it barred her from the service until Tuesday. “We took enforcement action on the account @mtgreenee for violations of the Twitter Rules, specifically the Covid-19 misleading information policy,” a Twitter spokesman said. The company also added labels to Ms. Greene’s posts about the vaccines, calling them “misleading” and pointing to information about the safety of the inoculations.

All I can fathom is the GOP doesn't want to hand Biden a win by getting a lot of people vaccinated so they are putting their supporters' lives at risk. All for their own selfish gains (re-election) and while being vaccinated themselves!

How do these people sleep at night? I'm serious.

in an effort to make Biden look as bad as Dumdum, something that is just not going to happen.

The disinformation campaign is akin to shouting "fire!" in a crowded theater. While I tend to be a free speech purist, I also think the plug needs to be pulled on services that push this disinformation campaign. It is killing people.

Free speech means you won't be put into prison for saying stupid stuff. It doesn't guarantee the right to a megaphone or captive audience.

in my RW-leaning area. While many have wished and prayed for a race war to provide a reason for some winnowing of the wheat from the chaff, that has consistently failed to happen. Coronavirus is the next best thing - 600k dead, and disproportionately minorities. All one has to do is discourage vaccination and go about one's business without a mask, reality takes care of the rest.

Of course some people might question whether other people could be so heinous as to think that way, but it seems to be the case. From what I've heard. And I haven't heard any alternative explanations that make more sense.

She lies and provokes people as much as TFG did. He gets a total ban, she gets 12 hours. Way to go, Twitter. That'll show her.

There's no way Greene will stop what she's doing. To people like her, being told to quiet down is usually an impetus to rachet things up another notch. Here's hoping this is just Twitter's warning shot and a heftier ban, perhaps even a permanent one, might come along in the future.

2nd will be much steeper, and third will most likely be permanent.

Don't worry, as someone who's moderated multiple forums, I can say that it's only a matter of time before she will step in it, and it will be sooner than later.

Twitter suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene for spreading covid-19 misinformation

Twitter temporarily suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for violating its covid-19 misinformation policy after she falsely claimed that the coronavirus was “not dangerous” for some people.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed Monday evening that the company had taken “enforcement action” on Greene’s personal account for violations of its policies.

The account was put on “read-only” mode for 12 hours, which according to Twitter’s rules happens “if it seems like an otherwise healthy account is in the middle of an abusive episode.” The 12-hour suspension is the shortest of Twitter’s read-only penalties, which its website says can range from 12 hours to seven days, “depending on the nature of the violation.” Greene’s account had violated the misinformation policy multiple times, according to Twitter.

Greene tweeted Monday that the novel coronavirus was “not dangerous for non-obese people and those under 65.” More than 600,000 people in the United States have died from covid-19.
................................

In another tweet, Greene falsely claimed that “defeating obesity” would protect people from covid-19 complications and death.
