Shontel Brown, who stuck close to Biden, wins Democratic primary for House seat in Ohio, AP projects
Source: Associated Press
CLEVELAND Shontel Brown, whose campaign highlighted her loyalty to President Joe Biden, won a special election primary Tuesday in Ohios 11th Congressional District, a race that commanded national attention while dividing national Democrats along ideological lines.
Brown, whose victory was projected by The Associated Press, defeated Nina Turner, a former state senator known nationally for her work on Sen. Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns.
"Dont leave this place sad, Turner, who conceded shortly after 10 p.m. ET, told supporters gathered at a bowling alley in Maple Heights. Dont leave this place depressed. I want you to leave this celebration more resolute, because we still have more work to do.
For months, the race had been Turners to lose, given her broader fundraising base and early lead in polling. Brown, a Cuyahoga County Council member who also chairs the countys Democratic Party, caught up in the final weeks as outside groups helped her close the money gap and both candidates invited national surrogates to campaign in the district.

Yes, this is from the holy grail of race calls, Associated Press!
For some reason, with all the news outlets in the United States, only ONE is acceptable, Associated Press.

(1,123 posts)but your optimism and enthusiasm (although appreciated) is not grounded in actual reality. Ohio is not "becoming somewhat purple" and is rather becoming more of a solid "red" state. I've been a resident (trying desperately to escape) of Ohio for over 24 years and have witnessed the GQP expanding their stranglehold over it year after year. Despite voters approving rules in 2015 and 2018 for drawing electoral maps that would be more fair and transparent, the GQP has chose to ignore the will of the people and proceed with creating districts that maintain their dominance and absolute control. Outside of the major metro areas, all of the remaining state is bright red and is represented by some of the most hyper-partisan, extremist in the GQP universe. Voters in these areas have been conditioned to ignore the massive, epic corruption that routinely occurs, accept legislation that is contrary to their economic interests, and cast their votes purely on "God, Guns, and Gays." In most districts in Ohio, all you need is a "R" behind your name to get elected. With all due respect to DU Floridians, there's a reason that Ohio has been dubbed the "Florida of the Midwest."

(17,984 posts)Redistricting process with a committee instead of Republicans picking and choosing.
Most cities in Ohio are blue. Cincinnati has a Democratic Mayor. So does Dayton. Both are running to replace DeWine. Republicans have become so corrupt it is oozing all over.
I do know all the counties along the Ohio River put Obama in office. A Republican area for over 100 years. Ohio put him over the top in electoral votes. I know, jumped clear out of my Lazy Boy to cheer!
The rural areas remain Republican.

(1,123 posts)comfortable, because your wait may seem like eternity (which it may will be). The GQP has been and will continue resisting any redistricting that even would remotely threaten their absolute control and ability to act with total impunity. They consistently pass legislation that adversely impacts and is contemptuous of governance and residents in urban areas. This approach has been very effective as it causes those urban dwellers to become extremely frustrated with their local government/leaders and they then become apathetic to voting. In the suburbs, the GQP has been methodically gaining control of all levels of local government and has recently become more aggressive in in their campaign to dominate school boards. Their obsession with promoting regressive tax laws, which coddle business interests and penalize wage earners/pensioners, proceeds with unabated enthusiasm. I can go on, but you get the idea.

(17,984 posts)Buckeyes voted over whelmingly for an unbiased committee to redistrict, rather than either Political party. John Boehner drew the horrible Gym Jordan District half way across Ohio. From Columbus colear up to Marion County.
The irony is Gym and the Freedumb Caucus pushed Boehner out.

(15,325 posts)She had literally zero record to run on, against Brown, so gutter politics became her media messaging.
They should all be ashamed of the words she spoke, and the support they gave in support of it.
They all wear that stench for not demanding a higher level of self respect.
Biden is not a bowl of shit
Harris is not merely a seat filler
Clyburn is not stupid.
And those are just 3 of the cringeworthy words used to address our finest lifelong Democratic Party leaders.
It was awful & there's no excuse for any person of self respect to ignore her words.
I am so glad its over.

(25,938 posts)lies a reminder that political polling is a dismal science. Correct me if Im wrong, but polls showed Shontel Brown merely closing the gap as of Election Day. Polls will continue to get touted incessantly, Im sure, but I hope the final numbers in this race drive a stake through the heart of the notion that polling has any real value.

So, I do credit her with this one decent act (albeit little else).
On edit, seems that though she technically conceded, she'd started to launch a very Trump-like response, stopped only by aids when she sought to claim "corrupt $$ defeated her."

(47,430 posts)I wonder if any of them have any regrets right now. Their endorsements certainly affected my opinion of them to some degree, if for no other reason, the lack of reasonable judgment. The whole world could see what an out-of-control flame thrower Turner has been for years. What on earth did they believe Turner would have contributed to the Democratic party?
The good news is Brown won by 6 points after polls showed her behind for months. This is wonderful news and a great relief.

I agree!
PatSeg
(47,430 posts)rarely accomplished positive change. They just blew things up and left them for others to clean up, much like undisciplined teenagers. They tend to be good at recognizing the problems and what needs changing, but they don't have the temperament, discipline, patience, or expertise to make change happen. If they don't get all of what they want fast enough, they throw more bombs often alienating the people who initially agreed with them. In the end, they probably get no progressive change at all.
You know, I used to get so sick of hearing Obama's people saying over and over again, "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good", but over time, I could see they were right. Initially, Obamacare was a major disappointment and far from perfect, but it ended up being a big improvement over what we had before. As I get older, I realize that lasting change does tend to come incrementally and there will always be those who won't be happy about it.
And that brings us back to Nina Turner. I don't think she'll ever be satisfied, because she thrives on the problems, it is what fuels her.

(17,984 posts)That is what Biden said and McConnell actually said the same thing! Compromise means no one will get everything they want but like anything you have to start somewhere.
We need to fight to keep those who compromise in control. I am feeling more hopeful every day.
PatSeg
(47,430 posts)those who have problems with compromise. There are times when the purist in me is resistant, but the pragmatist in me usually (not always) prevails. An "all or none" attitude is a huge loser. More often than not, you end up with the "none"! A much younger me would probably disagree.

Once. I am on a board where both sides are mad at me, but I stirred up the conversation.
We can all be hide bound demanding everything go our way. Life does not work that way. Reading posts where I want my 1950 life style back . The 1950s were not the utopia people think.
It was a case of men coming home from war, working their heads off to create a thriving middle class, then letting it dribble away. While their families helped.
I noticed this week on the Senate floor how many women spoke on compromise.
PatSeg
(47,430 posts)The 1950s were very good for some people. After the Great Depression and World War II, the stability and the financial opportunities were very appealing. Of course, the increased home ownership and college educations were largely due to government programs for veterans. Unfortunately, not everyone thrived and for those that did, it didn't always last.
It is interesting that the women in the Senate were more likely to be willing to compromise. As a mother, I can understand that. It is in our blood.
