Canada is headed for a federal election on Sept. 20

Source: CBC

Following a meeting with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau this morning, Gov. Gen. Mary Simon approved his request to dissolve Parliament, triggering the issuing of the election writs and formally beginning Canada's 44th federal election.

The campaign will last 36 days — the minimum campaign length permitted by law.
...
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh went so far as to urge Simon to refuse Trudeau's request. Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said Monday he was concerned about holding a campaign during a fourth wave of the pandemic and accused Trudeau of pursuing an election in his own political "self-interest."
...
The federal Liberals continue to hold a lead in public polling, capturing 35.6 per cent of public support against 28.8 per cent for the Conservatives and 19.3 per cent for the NDP, according to CBC's Poll Tracker. That level of support puts them just in range of the 170 seats needed to form a majority government.

3. While the NDP does well in certain provinces, they aren't strong enough nationally at this point

The best we can hope for this time is that once again, Trudeau must form a minority coalition with the NDP.

I remember the starefests he would have with Levesque during meetings in the early 1980’s…particularly the 1982 constitution talks.

Levesque seemed like he wanted to crawl under a rock.

8. Yah, Covid is surging so let's have an election that isn't necessary until 2023.

While I expect he'll win, Trudeau is playing fast and loose with the health of Canadians. If BC's election was any indication, the demand for mail in ballots is going to be extremely high.

.

Imagie if y'all had that short a campaign season down there!

Seems to me the campaigning never ends in the US

Anyhoo - I think it's a good move, and agree with his reasoning . . . .

From the link in the OP:

From the podium outside of Rideau Hall this morning, Trudeau pushed back against his critics, saying Canadians deserve a chance to decide who should guide the country out of the pandemic.

"In this pivotal, consequential moment, who wouldn't want a say? Who wouldn't want their chance to help decide where our country goes from here?" he said.

"So to the other parties, please explain why you don't think Canadians should get a choice, why you don't think that this is a pivotal moment. I'm focused on our real plan. I'm focused on the path forward."

Our vaccination success is one of the highest in the World under Justin Trudeau's leadership.

I'm fully vaxxed - the visits to our local arena were short, and well organized - about a 5 minute wait - 5 minute inoculation including entering the info into the system, and a vaccination certificate in my email by the time I got home

The longest part of the experience was the required 15 minute wait to ensure no severe reaction to the jab occurred, and an info sheet advising even the fully vaxxed to continue with masks and social distancing - after all, we have no idea ho much this virus will mutate . . . .

Now is not the time to change our leaders imo, but better now than in the midst of the fourth wave - or the next one.

If Justin gets the Majority he hopes for - then noone can stop our progress with this bug thingie . . . .

Once more -

At least we only get about a month of all the whining and backstabbing that is sure to occur before Sept 20th.

Go Justin!
