WASHINGTON (AP) A man who claimed to have a bomb in a pickup truck near the Capitol surrendered to law enforcement after an hourslong standoff Thursday that prompted a massive police response and the evacuations of government buildings and businesses in the area.
Police did not immediately know whether there were explosives in the vehicle, but authorities were searching the truck in an effort to understand what led the man, identified by law enforcement officials as 49-year-old Floyd Ray Roseberry of North Carolina, to drive onto the sidewalk outside the Library of Congress and make bomb threats to officers.
The standoff was resolved peacefully after roughly five hours of negotiations, ending when Roseberry crawled out of the truck and was taken into law enforcement custody. But the incident brought the area surrounding the Capitol to a virtual standstill as police emptied buildings and cordoned off streets as a precaution. Congress is in recess this week, but staffers were seen calmly walking out of the area at the direction of authorities.
The episode unfolded during a tense period in Washington, coming eight months after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and and one month before a planned rally in Washington that law enforcement officials have been preparing for.
A person is apprehended after being in a pickup truck parked on the sidewalk in front of the Library of Congress' Thomas Jefferson Building, as seen from a window of the U.S. Capitol, Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, in Washington. Officials evacuated a number of buildings around the Capitol and sent snipers to the area after officers saw a man holding what looked like a detonator inside the pickup, which had no license plates. The man was identified as Floyd Ray Roseberry, 49, of Grover, North Carolina, according to two people briefed on the matter. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Investigators said Roseberry had a propane tank in his truck but said they werent sure if there was an explosive device in the vehicle. Roseberry posted several videos on a now-deleted Facebook page on Thursday, demanding to speak with President Joe Biden. Authorities have not determined Roseberrys motive at this time. During a long Facebook live video, Roseberry said, the revolution is on and that he would die for this land.
WCNC Charlotte confirmed that Roseberry is a Republican registered voter since 2016. Investigators said Roseberrys criminal record was nothing that serious. In the late 1980s, Roseberry was charged with theft of more than $ 200 and driving without a license. He was given probation for those crimes. United States Capitol Police said Roseberrys mother recently passed away. Members of Roseberrys family told police that he was dealing with other problems.

(34,108 posts)maybe being charged with the theft of more than $200.00 and driving without a license is considered "nothing that serious" and maybe that is a large part of our problems here.
I have never, ever even thought about doing any of those things and if they were on my record I would be "MuseRider the Saint" so nobody would ever know I did those things.
Nothing that serious, probation. Aren't we supposed to know better than to steal by the time we are 3 or 4 years old and know that we should never drive without a license when we get our license?
Almost all my entire birth family was dead before I turned 50 and we all have problems. This should not be a part of law enforcement, he should be treated for whatever those problems are AND spend some down time with lots of helping others work to do. We are so fuckin confused in this country.

(21,328 posts)whatever the outcome. This guy, and others like him, should be prohibited from owning a BB gun for the rest of his life.
The seditionists who attacked law enforcement on 1/6 should be prohibited from owning a BB gun the rest of their lives.
It never seems to happen though.

(42,862 posts)The Democrats do not have a super-majority and we don't have the votes to just barrel-our-way through and do everything we want to do without negotiating. There's always going to be some compromise, some give-and-take, some middle ground, finding common interests, giving up a little here to gain a little there.
What's wrong with that? Did you have an alternate plan that you can share with everyone?
BradAllison
(1,879 posts)So no, I really don't. Sorry I guess.

Are you seriously trying to suggest that NO-LOAF is better than HALF-A-LOAF? All I'm trying to find out is this: How does political pride and vanity actually serve the greater good?
BradAllison
(1,879 posts)Yes or No?
Do you admit it being blocked is the only thing saving the Republican party as a viable party with power in this country?
The other party relies on flat out cheating and discrimination to hold any semblance of power.
Political vanity? Pride? Holy shit.......I'm gonna stop before I get hidden......
Let's end this conversation now. Have a great night.

(42,862 posts)Please explain to me how ANYTHING gets done without being willing to compromise... or without being willing to give-and-take... or without being willing to find common ground. We simply don't have the numbers.
As an adult, I prefer to look at things realistically.
BradAllison
(1,879 posts)The other side being racists and cheaters out to end democracy, and the fact when they regain power they will show no such compromise is a real sticking point for your weak argument. Don't see how you work around that unless it's just not a big enough deal for you.
The total condescending attitude you display gets you blocked. Bye.
