Democratic Rep. Raskin Threatens Steve Bannon With Jail: 'He's Completely Exposed'
Source: Mediaite
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) raised the prospect on Monday that Steve Bannon would be sentenced to jail if he refused to testify before the House committee investigating Jan 6.
MSNBCs Yasmin Vossoughian, who was filling in for Stephanie Ruhle, noted in a morning interview with Raskin that Bannon was refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena on the basis of executive privilege, which empowers presidential staffers to defy Congress. Bannon left the White House in August 2017, more than three years before Januarys unrest in Washington, D.C.
He wasnt working for the executive branch, Raskin observed. So even if you assume hypothetically that Donald Trump has some kind of executive privilege, which is extremely dubious in itself, how could that extend to Steve Bannon? So hes completely exposed.
He also recalled the case of Susan McDougal, who was convicted in 1996 of fraud and conspiracy for her role in the Whitewater scandal that engulfed former President Bill Clinton. The former president pardoned McDougal before he left office in 2001, but not before she spent 18 months in jail for refusing to testify to a grand jury about Clintons role in the affair.

Descended from Russian Jewish immigrants, Jamin Ben Raskin was born in Washington, D.C. on December 13, 1962, to Barbara (née Bellman) Raskin and Marcus Raskin. His mother was a journalist and novelist and his father was a former staff aide to President John F. Kennedy on the National Security Council, co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies, and a progressive activist. Raskin graduated from Georgetown Day School in 1979 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1983. In 1987, he received a J.D. degree magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Raskin was a constitutional law professor at American University Washington College of Law for over 25 years, where he taught future fellow impeachment manager Stacey Plaskett. He co-founded and directed the LL.M. program on law and government and co-founded the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project. From 1989 to 1990, Raskin also served as general counsel for Jesse Jackson's National Rainbow Coalition. In 1996, he represented Ross Perot over Perot's exclusion from the 1996 United States presidential debates. Raskin wrote a Washington Post op-ed that strongly condemned the Federal Election Commission and the Commission on Presidential Debates for their decisions.
He always was obviously extremely bright but dang, magna cum laude add both Harvard law school and undergrad?

(70,635 posts)Bannon knows he broke the law a number of times that are not covered but his pardon from Trump
and his bluster and braggadocio will carry no weight with the members of the Jan. 6th committee.

If a few do show up, give them each an hour grilling in front of the committee and then reschedule them for follow-up.

It is very simple.
Don't threaten him, throw his ass in jail.

(28,281 posts)trump's fascist overtaking of this country appears to be gaining support by the day, while Democrats are more and more perceived as gutless dithering fools, unwilling to use the very real, legitimate powers they have. Is there another civil war in our future, against trump's brain-dead hordes? Are we going to allow the most evil political figure in our country's history to prevail?
Immediate action.

(3,407 posts)1. Get rid of the filibuster.
2. Get rid of the Electoral College.
3. Enforce the subpoenas.
4. Get rid of those rules that protect criminals just because they are in office.
5. A president CAN and SHOULD be indicted if he/she commits a crime, get rid of that cowardly opinion that a sitting president cannot be indicted.
6. Executive Privilege must be banned for matter concerning criminal behaviour.
7. If Garland is not going to get serious about indicting trump, then get someone else who will.
8. If Garland is not going to get serious about indicting all the other republicans, then find someone else who will.
9. A person who commits a crime, whether it is fraud, or anything else and was convicted MUST NOT be able to run for public office. Why would we want crooks in office? I believe in 2nd chances, but 2nd chances must have limits.
10. Get rid of the republican party...OK, I know this one is hard, but...
11. Impose regulations on the media to not allow lies to be told to the public. We must protect the truth.
I could come with more, but that is enough to get started.

Even if he can't exercise his rights due to the pardon, it would take years to litigate in court.
