N.J. teacher denies pulling off student's hijab, report says

A South Orange-Maplewood School District teacher accused of pulling a hijab off the head of a 7-year-old Muslim student in school last week has denied the incident occurred, according to a report.
Tamar Herman, a teacher at Seth Boyden Elementary School, said in a statement from her attorney that the second grade student wasnt wearing a hijab and was instead wearing a hoodie, NBC reported.
In accordance with school policy, Ms. Herman directed a student in her class to pull down the hood on a hooded sweatshirt because it was blocking her eyes - and immediately rescinded that request when she realized that the student was wearing the hood in place of, rather than on top of, her usual hijab, Hermans attorney Samatha Harris told NBC.

The Jewish teacher said the student was wearing a hoodie (against school dress code), not a hijab (permitted by law), while the mother said it was a hijab, not a hoodie.
Initial social media headlines stated as fact that a hijab was removed.
The cameras will have the last word.

(7,877 posts)In a mixed country such as Egypt, there are many styles of scarves and hijab, not to mention the significant numbers of Christians ( mainly Coptic).
Around the age of 16 ( might be 12, might be 18), more. girls switch to traditional head coverings.
If a 2nd grader is wearing a hijab, then the familys country of origin is of course quite conservative: Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Iran come to mind.
My guess is that teacher is destined for a change of classroom or license.

(13,921 posts)I can imagine there are times when a classroom is chaos and you dont know who is who.
I can see some humans demanding another remove their covering, or physically snatching at it.
I can also see times when a teacher might only see the back of a student, wearing a hoodie they know is against dress code, and ask it to be removed before knowing who they were talking too.
Hopefully theres video that will clarify what exactly happened

(12,439 posts)charge from the parent was soon followed by a GoFundMe request. I suspect that was the real motive for the complaint.
After hearing about her kid's hijab being "forcibly removed." Mommy does not call the school to question what happened. Rather, she immediately goes to Facebook.
Hallway cameras will determine if the tyke was wearing a "style" of hijab or if it was, indeed, a hoodie.
I suspect the teacher will be suing Mommy for slander.

Gov. Phil Murphy on his social media said he was "deeply disturbed" by the accusation and said that every student should feel safe and welcome in school, regardless of their race, religion, or culture.
"We call for the immediate firing of the Maplewood teacher who pulled off the headscarf of a young Muslim student. Anything less is an insult to the students and parents of Maplewood, NJ," the Muslim-American civil rights group CAIR-NJ wrote on its Twitter account.
