Kyle Rittenhouse cleared of all charges in Kenosha shootings
Source: Associated Press
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) Kyle Rittenhouse has been acquitted of all charges after pleading self-defense in the deadly Kenosha, Wisconsin, shootings that became a flashpoint in the nations debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice.
The jury came back with its verdict after close to 3 1/2 days of deliberation.
Rittenhouse, 18, could have gotten life in prison if found guilty of the most serious charge against him.
He was charged with homicide, attempted homicide and recklessly endangering safety for killing two men and wounding a third with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle.
The shootings took place during a night of protests over police violence against Black people in the tumultuous summer of 2020. Rittenhouse is white, as were those he shot. The jury appeared to be overwhelmingly white.

(714 posts)Yeah, they should definitely look into judicial misconduct since the jury was instructed that it couldn't even consider convicting him on the one charge he was clearly guilty of: being underage while using that type of gun.
They had him on videotape breaking that law.
Regardless of whether it was 'self-defense' or not, the kid under the law had no right to be bearing that firearm.
I'd like some authority to ask the judge what grounds he used to not let the jury consider convicting the kid for breaking that law.
And since the jury wasn't allowed to look into convicting the kid under that law, it wouldn't be double jeopardy to try him in the future for having broken that law.

(8,704 posts)I agree. We need to protect ourselves, not be targets for murderous right wing extremists that can apparently get away with almost anything.
We should not let our righteous desire for sensible gun control handicap us into not defending ourselves.
Like many other things in life, this is a matter where the right answer is not the same for every individual.
I've never owned a gun, and I don't ever want to own one. It's never been my thing, and it's not going to suddenly become my thing after 70+ years on this planet. Anyone who wants to "arm up" is welcome to do so, but please count me out.
I am not opposed to responsible gun ownership, it's just not for me. It's one thing if you're used to handling firearms and being around them. I'm not, and at this point in my life, I have no interest in getting used to it. Being able to defend oneself sounds good in theory, but I know it wouldn't work that way for me. I'm enough of a klutz that I'd be as likely to shoot off my own foot or take out an innocent bystander as I would be to stop some crazed MAGAt in his tracks.
Not going to do it, sorry. If one of those assholes is sick and crazy enough to shoot a harmles, unarmed, little old lady, then I guess I'm just SOL.
hadEnuf
(2,195 posts)Nor would I fault them for it. I respect their decisions and quite frankly, I have no desire to become a counterpart of these nuts arming themselves to the teeth. However, these people like Rittenhouse are very dangerous and are being allowed to walk away free & laughing after what was clearly an instigated incident on his part resulting in 2 killings and a severe wounding. And in more and more situations like this the law is not doing it's job.
If a person does not want to own a gun then that's fine, but others need to realize that trying to "not be like them" simply leaves us unable to defend ourselves when being faced with armed, violent and murderous extremists.

Rittenhouse's life will now be hell. George Zimmerman, destitute after being shunned by polite society and ignored by former supporters in rightwing media, sued Trayvon Martin's family and attorney Ben Crump for $100 million a couple of years ago, claiming he'd been "victimized" since the 2012 shooting.
The complaint also named several former prosecutors, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state of Florida as defendants. It additionally claimed there was a conspiracy involving a fake witness that led to Zimmermans arrest and prosecution. Larry Klayman, Zimmermans batshit crazy attorney, said his client regularly faces death threats, gave up career aspirations, struggled to find work and suffers from PTSD in the fallout from the incident.

(10,018 posts)The politics of eliminationismin which ordinary democratic discourse is replaced by the constant drumbeat of demonization that depicts one's political opponents as inhuman objects fit only for exterminationhas been growing steadily in America for well over a decade, reaching a fever pitch during Donald Trump's tenure in the White House.
But now, in the post-Trump era, his rabid fans have ripped off the mask of plausible deniability and are now openly calling for killing liberals and Trump criticswhich includes anyone who believes he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.
Much of this toxic discourse is occurring in the more extreme corners of the internet, but on Monday at a "Critical Racism Tour" event in Nampa, Idaho, it was blurted out into the open when an audience member asked Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk: "When do we get to use the guns?
How many elections are they gonna steal before we kill these people?" Kirk replied with a nondenunciation denunciation, warning that such talk is "playing into their hands," but then saying that the query was just "overly blunt" and agreeing that "we are living under fascism."

Myself, I honestly don't think he went to Kenosha that night looking to kill someone. He's just a teenager with dreams of being one day a super cop who got caught up in situation that was way over his head he was too young to understand.

(8,200 posts)People in general support peaceful protests that are conducted with no violence. In this case the protestors were breaking the law firstly by ignoring the curfew as was the so called business protectors. They latter presented by their actions what many regarded as a threat to law and order. When they chose to demonstrate they were in jeopardy of losing any support for their cause. The fact is people have become impatient with this type of behavior as contrast with the peaceful marches by Black citizens lead by King. These demonstrators were identified with the lawless rioters who have burned and looted stores. This created a drama that set the stage for what transpired. As a consequence many believe they had no claim to be respectful citizens expressing their frustration with outright prejudice by the police. Just plain lawless rioters.
As to the judge, he was in my opinion totally unqualified to conduct this type of case. Firstly, he is elected and depends on the support of the citizens for retention. This begs the question of how impartial can he be if his job is determined in part, if not majorly, on his alignment with the voters political persuasions. The situation was stacked against the prosecution from the outset. Many can elaborate further on the situation. It seems that it was a situation that asked for what transpired. A immature kid with what-a-be cop mentality armed with a deadly weapon and unruly demonstrators. Just where were the police and why could they have not better contained the explosive situation?

This kind of thing seems to be a part of many big demonstrations over the last few years - perhaps is has always been a part of big protests.

(50,560 posts)Conservatives aren't the only ones who know where Cabela's is, and (at least for now) you don't have to show your GOP registration card to buy a gun. What happens if the next Rittenhouse starts brandishing his gun and someone he's brandishing it at fills him with lead?

(1,666 posts)The poster asked what happens next. Well, if both sides bring guns and claim self defense, then war breaks out. Or more maybe minor skirmishes.

(45,460 posts)anyone can claim they feared for their lives as long as the other folks are dead. These people have been buying up lots more guns hoping for an opportunity to use them.

(2,022 posts)but it seems like with big protests are now accompanied by "shadow action" of opposing groups looking for a fight. From what I read about the Kenosha case, it seems the people involved were not typical protestors.

(45,460 posts)are very likely to find it. Guns make it all 1000 times worse. There's only so much damage a person can do with a skateboard or baseball bat or their fists.

(14,061 posts)Using deadly force to protect property is illegal, as is shooting anyone running away from you. But all you need to claim is you felt threatened.
We are just so fucked up. I really have no hope anymore.

(22,103 posts)This guy showed up with the intention of killing people with a weapon that only belongs in the hands of the military (he thought it looked, cool). How in the world did this get warped into self-defense?
He'll make tons in guest appearances and rallies now.

(15,222 posts)Hard to believe he got away with it. I hope the civil suits give the victims some source of closure. Rittenhouse has nothing to get today, but they should file because he may be Trumps running mate at some point. Get a judgment in place just in case.

(14,855 posts)... if someone brings a deadly weapon to an unlawful assembly of people, then that deadly weapon can be used to kill someone else who got close to them -- because the other person MIGHT use the weapon to harm the person who brought the weapon in the first place!

I knew the little fucker would get off. Such is the way this reich (oops, meant right) wing country is going.
Makes me sick that vigilantism is normalized in this society.
Lets hope the Arbery jury gets it right.

So, all-white jury?

(6,537 posts)I can't imagine what the jury was thinking. We can all worry about this. From giving permission to mow people down with cars to shooting people in crowds, it sets the stage for more. I hope this perp remembers all his life that he killed two people and maimed a third, strangers he didn't know. There is no justification for this. This wasn't war, it was just murder.
The jury had an awesome responsibility, and they blew it. It's like we're getting some brain paralysis. It didn't matter what the victims had done in their lives. You just can't do that. It's very sobering to realize that people accept these outcomes. No wonder the Repubs are getting away with all those things they are doing.
I dunno, I don't get it.
