Jimmy Hoffa: Deathbed confession sparks long-missing US union boss body hunt

Source: BBC News

FBI agents have searched a plot of land in the US state of New Jersey after a deathbed confession renewed hope of solving union boss Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance 50 years ago.

For decades, Hoffa was one of America's most powerful labour organisers.

But in 1975 he suddenly disappeared, and his body has never been recovered.

Investigators recently received a tip that a former worker on a landfill site in Jersey City had said that his father told him he had buried Hoffa's body.

That means whatever is in there is at least all contained in one place. Of course, we don't know what condition the body was in when it was placed in the drum, but the fact it was contained in that manner could make a big difference when it comes to preservation, identification, etc.

…under the field in the old Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.

About two decades ago, when the software company I was working for was doing a pro football game, there was some consideration given to inserting an “Easter egg” whereby, if you played a game at that stadium on the night of Halloween, at precisely midnight, the ghost of Hoffa would emerge from one of the end zones and float away.

Hoffa was run through a baloney machine in New Jersey.

Even after 50 years, there might be enough DNA left to make an identification.

Mr. Rate: Whoever took that shot's probably dead now. That's how conspiracy works. Them boys on the grassy knoll, they were dead within three hours. Buried in the damn desert. Unmarked graves out past Terlingua.

Nick Memphis: And you know this for a fact?

He's dead. The goombahs who did it are probably dead.

His kids are 80 and 73. They'd obviously like to know, but they've probably already made their peace with his death.

The word goombah is insulting to Italian-Americans. It has been used on them for decades, although less commonly in recent times.

It is derived from the Italian word compare, pronounced "coom-baray". Compare is used by men and means close male friend, old buddy, and/or godparent to a man's children. A couple of old guys sitting and drinking wine together might repeat the word over and over to express their pleasure about their friendship. I'm not Italian, but I have witnessed this among people I know.
