With federal sign-offs, all American adults now eligible for coronavirus vaccine boosters

Last edited Sat Nov 20, 2021, 01:56 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Washington Post

All American adults became eligible for coronavirus vaccine boosters on Friday, ending months of confusion over complicated guidelines that had slowed their uptake and prompted unilateral moves by governors from Maine to California to make the shots available more broadly. Federal health officials hope a straightforward boosters-for-all policy will prompt millions more people to get the shots before they travel or gather with friends and family over the holidays.

Many are concerned about the worsening picture as winter approaches. After new cases dipped to almost 69,000 on Oct. 25 — their lowest point in months — they began climbing again, with the seven-day average rising 40 percent to more than 96,000 on Thursday. The final piece of the booster-policy overhaul fell into place early Friday evening when Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accepted two unanimous recommendations from the agency’s independent experts.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices said anyone 18 and older may get a booster and — to stress the urgency of increasing protection for the most vulnerable age group — anyone 50 and older should make sure they get one. “Based on the compelling evidence, all adults over 18 should now have equitable access to a COVID-19 booster dose,” Walensky said in a statement. “Booster shots have demonstrated the ability to safely increase people’s protection against infection and severe outcomes and are an important public health tool to strengthen our defenses against the virus as we enter the winter holidays.”

The more forceful recommendation for those 50 and older had not been on the agenda and was added at the last minute. Members said it was important to convey that older adults have the clearest benefit versus risk, with far less chance than young people of developing the rare but serious cardiac side effects from the mRNA vaccines.

so I am all vaxxed and boosted up!

I had Moderna for the first 2 and the booster (which is a 1/2 dose) only got approved for Moderna the week I hit 6 months post dose-2 (which was the 3rd week of October). So was glad to be able to finally get time to do it and got a walk-in to get both vaccines.

I was a little worried about only getting half a dose, since I didn't get Moderna's first round of benefits. They said that half a dose will be enough, even if you got Pfizer the first time around. I hope that is the case.

Regardless, I feel a lot safer than I did before the booster shot. Everyone should avail themselves of this opportunity IMO.

The Moderna 1/2 dose still offers a larger quantity of the active component at (50ug) than the Pfizer 2-dose initial and 3rd dose booster shots (which are 30ug each). The full Moderna initial doses are 100ug each.

I think those who are intent on getting vaxxed will have no problem going out and getting it. And I know as much as some CDC Committee members keep insisting that focus needs to be on the unvaxxed, I think at at this point, almost a year since the vaccines were first offered, the ones left are literally down to the refusers - with many of them now starting to file lawsuits against the mandates.

For example here in Philly, I heard on the radio that some of the city workers left still not not vaxxed are in unions - like the FOP Lodge 5 and the Fire fighter's union, who are suing the city. They also announced that many in our Streets Department (probably many who haul trash) who have still not gotten vaxxed.

In some cases, they have argued that as a "change in working conditions" it needs to be negotiated and/or go through arbitration. The city had actually done that with some of the other unions (as part of any who had contracts that came up this year).

In fact - just looking it up, I didn't realize the city put out a new mandate (and is offering $300 bonuses to those who complete their vax course by December 24) - https://www.phila.gov/2021-11-19-city-of-philadelphia-employees-required-to-be-vaccinated-against-covid-19/

City of Philadelphia employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19

November 19, 2021 James Garrow Board of Health, Department of Public Health

Today, we’re announcing that all union-represented City of Philadelphia employees and City contractors must complete their COVID-19 vaccine series by January 14, 2022

Philadelphia has worked hard to turn back COVID-19, and we have had success in doing so through our shared commitment to safety protocols, including vaccinations. However, that fight is not over, and the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines remain our best weapon in this ongoing struggle.

Because of this, the City has already implemented vaccine mandates for new employees, institutes of higher education and healthcare workers, and exempt and non-represented civil service employees. As a result of the residents of Philadelphia doing their part to get vaccinated and these mandates, nearly 75% of adults in Philadelphia are fully vaccinated. While that’s great news, it means we still have more work to do.

By January 14, 2022, all City of Philadelphia employees and contractors must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

All full-time City employees who have completed their full schedule of COVID-19 vaccination and provided proof of their vaccination status by December 24, 2021, will receive a bonus of $300.

Employees and contractors with valid exemptions must submit their request by December 20, 2021 to ensure it can be reviewed by the deadline. Those who are granted exemptions must wear two masks or an N95 and submit to regular testing.

City employees and contractors can start their vaccine series at any of the hundreds of vaccine sites in Philadelphia and across the region. Find the nearest vaccination clinic.

City of Philadelphia employees who have questions about the new policy should reach out to their departmental Human Resources or Safety professional.

I'm eligible on Nov 22. Since I live in CA I could get it before today's decision since my state already approved it.

because it's not true that everyone over 18 is now eligible for the booster shot. It fails to mention that there is a requirement for a certain amount of time to have passed since the initial vaccine shot(s). I haven't read the whole story because the link in the OP does not lead to it. I hope it is mentioned in the full story.

7. Remember that this pronouncement is nothing but an "expansion" of earlier guidance
Sat Nov 20, 2021, 06:43 AM
Nov 2021

I.e., expanding the original guidance that specified what the initial dosing and timing requirements are for each of the approved vaccines when it came to boosters, but then trying to simplify what was a complex list of criteria about WHO would be eligible for a booster.

None of the original "timing" for when the booster should be given, has been "changed". I.e., this -

So as an example for here in Philly - this is what our Health Department had circulated about "boosters" and who was "eligible" (and assumed receipt of the initial dose(s)) -

So the above booster guidance infographic done by my city has NOW BEEN DEPRECATED based on the OP article's announced decisions (that were done by FDA earlier and CDC yesterday).

I.e., what "changed" is that ANY ADULT (18 and over) will now be eligible for a booster (at 6 months after the initial mRNAs and 2 months after the single-dose Janssen (J&J)). That was not the case before (you had to be over a certain age and/or have underlying conditions and/or work in an occupation that puts you more at risk).

Who is still NOT yet eligible for a booster are the youngsters - the pediatric/adolescent group age 5 - 17. But otherwise, ALL ADULTS (no matter what their age 18+ or health condition) are eligible to get a booster after they get their initial shots.
