Sweden votes in Magdalena Andersson as first female PM

Source: BBC

Magdalena Andersson has been approved by Sweden's parliament as the country's first ever female prime minister, after replacing Stefan Lofven as leader of the centre-left Social Democrats.

Sweden is the only Nordic country never to have elected a woman as national leader before.

Ms Andersson, who's currently finance minister, did not win Wednesday's vote.

However, she was elected because under Swedish law she only needed a majority of MPs not to vote against her.

A hundred years after Swedish women were given the vote, the 54-year-old Social Democrat leader was given a standing ovation by sections of the parliament, or Riksdag.

3. Parliament is balanced on a knife-edge, and her confidence and supply arrangement broke up

In a turbulent sequence of events, Andersson had earlier in the day become the first woman elected to the post of prime minister in Sweden after clinching a last-minute deal with the Left party to raise pensions in exchange for its backing in Wednesday’s vote.

But the small Centre party withdrew its support for Andersson’s budget because of the concessions made to the Left, leaving the budget with insufficient votes to pass in parliament.

Parliament then adopted an alternative budget presented by the opposition conservative Moderates, Christian Democrats and far-right Sweden Democrats.

The fatal blow came when the Greens’ leader, Per Bolund, said his party could not tolerate the opposition’s “historic budget, drafted for the first time with the far right”, and quit the government. Among other things, the Greens said a planned tax cut on petrol would lead to higher emissions.

Figures from Wikipedia - I hope these are correct:

349 total, so 175 is a majority:
Interim government (100):
Social Democrats (100)

Confidence and supply (75):
Centre Party (31)
Left Party (27)
Green Party (16)
Independent (1)

Opposition (174):
Moderate Party (70)
Sweden Democrats (62)
Christian Democrats (22)
Liberals (20)

4. She Has Already Resigned

The budget she submitted was rejected and an alternative budget was passed.

The budget was rejected because a far right member of her group was given too much influence on the budget. Not sure what comes next. But the fascists are making headway, even in Sweden.
