Levee breaks in Northern New Jersey, floods three towns

Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A levee broke in northern New Jersey on Tuesday, flooding the towns of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt with 4 to 5 feet of water in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, officials told Reuters.

"We are in rescue mode," said Jeanne Baratta, chief of the Bergen County Executive. There were no reports of fatalities as of yet, she said.

Baratta said the three towns had been "devastated" by the flood of water. The break comes after Sandy, which dropped below hurricane status just before it hit the U.S. East Coast on Monday, flooded parts of New Jersey and New York City.

I had heard parts of NY had areas that were problematic in terms of flooding, but didn't know NJ was in that much trouble. If there is anyone out there from NJ, stay safe!

I grew up there, in Wayne, where the Passaic River floods after heavy rains. A lot of NJ rivers flow to the sea, and when the tide comes in, it forces water back up the rivers, with no place to go. Many of the rivers are also full of silt, and can't handle the runoff from all the paved areas in NJ.

We got a lot of wind and heavy rain, but it's tapering off, with sleet mixing in. There's some flooding along the Potomac and its tributaries, but nothing like what NJ and NY are going through. Amazingly (knock on wood) we have electricity.
