Romney Campaign Training Poll Watchers To Mislead Voters In Wisconsin
Source: ThinkProgress
Mitt Romneys campaign has been training poll watchers in Wisconsin with highly misleading and sometimes downright false information about voters rights.
Documents from a recent Romney poll watcher training obtained by ThinkProgress contain several misleading or untrue claims about the rights of Wisconsin voters. A source passed along the following packet of documents, which was distributed to volunteers at a Romney campaign training in Racine on October 25th. In total, six such trainings were held across the state in the past two weeks.
One blatant falsehood occurs on page 16 of the training packet, which informed poll watchers that any identification cards from a voter must include a photo, despite the fact that Wisconsins voter ID law has been blocked by multiple state judges for this election.
The training also encouraged volunteers to deceive election workers and the public about who they were associated with. On page 5 of the packet, Romney poll workers were instructed to hide their affiliation with the campaign and told to sign in at the polls as a concerned citizen instead. As Kristina Sesek, Romneys legal counsel who just graduated from Marquette Law School last year, explained, Were going to have you sign in this election cycle as a concerned citizen. Were just trying to alleviate some of the animosity of being a Republican observer up front.

We will be encouraging Democrats to vote straight D, but will help ALL voters know that...
THEY DO NOT NEED ID TO VOTE IN PENNSYLVANIA.*
We will also be looking for teabaggers and other Republicans, who will be there to turn away elderly, minority, and student voters.
*(Except for first time at that poll voters, such as I, who will just have to show a utility bill or something with an address, no photo ID required)

(671 posts)I worry because I'm working the polls here in Florida and the organizers are begging for help in filling all of the slots. It seems very important in PA and hopefully they have had more success in filling all of the shifts.
Good on you to be helping out!
I'll add this: my husband wanted to know why so many people were needed and had doubts that me helping out would mean anything. This kind of stuff happens everywhere! Every vote counts! To everyone else: please consider getting involved locally to do this. You don't need to be a lawyer; I'm not and will be outside supporting the poll watchers inside.

(16,993 posts)I guess they think they can get away with anything.
(And they have, to some degree. Just consider the manner in which George W. Bush was awarded the Presidency in 2000.)
But no biggie, as nothing has been done about it in the last 12 years.

(10,271 posts)Now why on EARTH would ANYONE anyone harbor any "animosity" toward a Republican "poll-watcher"?
Oh, wait. THAT'S right...
At least SOME of the dumb lowlife rat-bastards seem to be able to learn from past mistakes. I don't know whats worse, though... that it takes a lawyer to do it, or that they learned the wrong fucking lesson.
Registration fraud is one thing, Mickey Mouse isn't going to show up on the ballot, no matter how many times his name is put on the rolls.
ELECTION TAMPERING should be considered tantamount to High Treason, with the nearly the same level of exacted punishment. Fucking around with the Right that GUARANTEES the continuation of all of others should get you, like, exiled to Siberia for a decade.
If Republicans win when voter turnout is low, then Election Day should be on a Saturday, and it should be a National Holiday, and the polls should be open from midnight to midnight, and if you have to work (at all) you should have to be paid time-and-a-half, PLUS the Holiday Pay. AND there should also be a National Voter Registration Day, (say, 6 months to the day prior to the Presidential Election) and County offices should committ workers to phone-banking and making themselves available to making sure your ducks are all in a row so you can vote, and after that day, NO CHANGES can be made to voting laws until AFTER the associated election.
If we value Our Democratic Process, and the Republic it gives us, these things should be FEDERAL LAW.
Fuck these thieving rat-bastards, (and only Thieving Rat-Bastards would oppose such Laws).

(70,510 posts)Because:
1) Only 1 person per party is allowed to get credentials to be inside the polls
and that person is not allowed to questions a voter's right to vote.
2) You are not allowed w/ in a 100' of the front door and we will have people
watching that too.
3) You can not sign in as a concerned citizen either.

(2,434 posts)I'll get my credentials on Tues morning and only one Republican will be allowed credentials. We are not allowed to just sit around and stare people down. We can go in and request a list of Dems who have voted. We can then go out and put notes on doors of those who have not and return to the polls a few hours later to check the list again. We can't lurk or ask for Repuke list.

(7,318 posts)instead of traditional neighborhood polling centers. Because we can vote anywhere in the county, if a repub wanted to challenge a voter here, they'd pretty much have to do it before absentee voting started on the 15th.

(2,434 posts)judging from my list so far, most of them will wait and go to the polls, so it's essential that we are diligent. Most of the folks in my precinct who have early-voted or mailed back their ballots are the elderly or activists.

(1 post)The article itself is fairly misleading--it's absolutely ridiculous to claim that a recent Marquette Law School graduate would be the counsel for a presidential candidate. (1) She has less than a year of experience working as an attorney and (2) she went to Marquette. Marquette's a decent school, but recent MU grads are NOT going to immediately start working as counselors to people like Mitt Romney. Check those school rankings.
And basic fact-checking shows that she actually works as an attorney/elections operator for the Republican Party of Wisconsin.
I am not a Romney supporter AT ALL, but let's at least be accurate when making claims about candidates and their tactics. Even though the WI Republican party is supporting Romney, it is not fair or truthful to call Ms. Sesek his counsel.

(2,146 posts)legal judgement as a representative of a political party, thereby setting party policy and rules, they may not be council, but they are acting in the party's name. Close enough for horse shoes...
One year or ten years out of law school does not change the fact that she is giving false legal advice, and is making herself party to a election fraud suit. She is supposed to know the law, period. No excuses.

(18,124 posts)One thing I've noticed in my neighborhood is that the anti-abortion (R) candidate's for Congress signs are in yards, yet as an assumption, people (R's) are ashamed to put mittytwit signs in their yard. Obama signs winning 5 to 1 in middle class yards and from what I can see, 3 to 1 in our more affluent areas. Neck and neck, my ass! But that's our MSM. If their treason wasn't so serious it would be laughable.

That way he has the date right, and the ID issue up front and someone could bring flyer to polls and tell the watcher to stop his unlawful obstruction.

(2,146 posts)If you are challenged, then do this:
1- ask to see their ID, and it must be a photoID with their address on it, to prove they are valid challengers. You could also demand back up for the photo ID , as well, using the same guidelines for voter ID - like a birth certificate, utility bill, etc. It is within your right to challenge the credentials and validity of the challenger.
2- then get the supervisor to come over, and make the challenger repeat the challenge in the presence of the supervisor. Make them show the Voting super their ID.
3- next, have the challenger write down the reason for the challenge, and include their personal contact information, and have the supervisor sign it. Make sure you have your name and address on the paper, too.
4- also, on the statement, include the following sentence, I, xxx, as a challenger, am not affiliated with any political party or an affiliated partisan political group.
If they challenger refuses to ID him or herself, and refuses to write down on paper why your vote is challenged, then you have grounds to challenge the challenger. Doing this in the presence of the voting supervisor, and having a signed paper, will also serve to make the voting super think twice about accepting any challenge.
This is court admissible evidence, should a case of vote suppression be raised.
