I knew he was up there in age and hadn't heard from him for awhile but what a loss to a fantastic actor and role model.

Didn't realize he had been Knighted.

R.I.P., condolences to the family, and thank you for so much of what you did during an iconic career.

I grew up in the 50's, watched every movie he ever made. I was drawn in by his acting, only to realize what an amazing human being he was. I'm so glad this man was born and lived during my time here! He will always live on in my heart.

Sidney Poitier, Black acting pioneer, dies aged 94

The first Black person to win a best actor Oscar gave a string of groundbreaking performances on screen that helped combat social prejudice

Sidney Poitier, whose groundbreaking acting work in the 1950s and 60s paved the way for generations of Black film stars, has died aged 94. His death was announced on Friday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas, Fred Mitchell.

Bahamas Prime Minister Chester Cooper said he was “conflicted with great sadness and a sense of celebration when I learned of the passing of Sir Sidney Poitier.

“Sadness that he would no longer be here to tell him how much he means to us, but celebration that he did so much to show the world that those from the humblest beginnings can change the world and that we gave him his flowers while he was with us.

“We have lost an icon; a hero, a mentor, a fighter, a national treasure.”

One of the first movies I remember him in was "A Patch of Blue" where he couldn't turn his back on a young blind woman living with her abusive mother. That kiss was so controversial at the time.

What a beloved treasure this man was. 'To Sir With Love' was a life changing film, for me. 'In the Heat of the Night' opened my eyes to so much. 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' - such a strong film for the time it was made.
