GOP picks final four in 2024 convention search

Source: Politico

Republicans are ramping up their search for a host city for the party’s 2024 national convention, narrowing the list of contenders to four cities.

The cities in contention are Milwaukee, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City, according to a person familiar with the search process. Party officials are planning to visit each of the locations over the coming months before finalizing a decision in the spring.

The deliberations come as the GOP begins its early preparations for the next presidential election. When Republican National Committee members gather in Salt Lake City next month for their annual winter meeting, they are expected to discuss a range of 2024-related issues, including the primary calendar, primary and general election debates and the convention search.

The choice of a convention host city has taken on an important symbolic role in recent years, with both parties using them to deliver statements of intent about competing for important swing states — and to direct attention and organizing resources to those places. Neither Republicans nor Democrats have gone outside a potential battleground for a convention city since 2004, though coronavirus interfered with both parties’ plans in 2020.

I think if they want a place they can control, it might be Salt Lake City. Would the evangelicals be OK with the city that is the enter for the Mormons?

One problem the Republicans have Is most urban areas, even in very red states, are blue. You need lots of hotel rooms and a very large convention hall assuming the convention is in person.

Having a GOp bash where they get to ride in like white saviors', in the land where George Floyd was killed, would be a coup. It would play right to their Midwestern choir.

It won't be concerned about it now. But, as stated above, it is the blue island in that state. I feel that, although there are plenty of MAGAts in Davidson county, most are surrounding it. I feel that it may become a literal battleground if they hold that thing there. (Even though you will get to see some serious policing if they do hold it there.)

Nashville would be embarrassing for them because there's enough anti-GOP/Trump country music stars to make the news daily.

Salt Lake City has nothing going for it except the locals wouldn't turn out a huge force of anti-GOP demonstrators. And it's difficult for outsiders to drive to.

Milwaukee and Pittsburgh are both battleground enough to be useful to them.

After all, what will these people do on their time off between camera breaks? Also, look at the kind of people the GOP attracts...do you want these people running around in our neighborhoods?

Go march in a torchlight parade or go find a group of disadvantaged and protest nonstop against them for the heck of it? If it were my city being considered, I would say PASS.

The so-called benefits of hosting such an event is NOT worth it. And I think my city knows it too. I'll call my city representative (or email better still) and let them know that I don't support the city in hosting this particular group.
