Biden calls Jan. 6 riot an attempted 'coup'

Source: The Hill

President Biden on Tuesday described the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters as an attempted “coup.”

“The violent mob of January 6, 2021, empowered and encouraged by a defeated former president, sought to win through violence what he had lost at the ballot box,” Biden said during a speech in Atlanta pushing for the passage of voting rights legislation. “To impose the will of the mob, to overturn free and fair election, and for the first time, the first time in American history, to stop the peaceful transfer of power. They failed, they failed, but democracy’s victory was not certain nor is democracy’s future.”

“That’s why we’re here today: to stand against the forces in America that value power over principle, forces that attempted a coup, a coup against the legally expressed will of the American people by sowing doubt, inventing charges of fraud and seeking to steal the 2020 election from the people,” he continued. “They want chaos to reign. We want the people to rule.”

The speech came on the heels of Biden’s forceful address marking the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack last week.
Tuesday’s speech appears to be the first instance of the president using the word “coup” to describe the attack, which he called an “armed insurrection” last week.

Biden on Tuesday argued for passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to counteract restrictive voting laws being imposed by GOP-controlled legislatures across the country. He endorsed changes to the legislative filibuster in order to pass the bills.

The speech was the latest instance of Biden employing fiery rhetoric to push back against Trump, who he referred to repeatedly as the “defeated former president,” and his role in the Jan. 6 riot.

not unlike Putin and the Russian mob taking over after the breakup of the USSR. The West is 50% public land, all the minerals, timber, gas and oil, view home sites on the rim of the Grand Canyon, it can all be privatized if you can just destroy the federal government. Do not underestimate our enemies, especially Putin and his lackey Trump. Think about everything they do in this context, and a lot of things they have done make a lot more sense.

I agree that it would be a lot harder than he thinks, but would he LIKE to do it? I THINK SO.

CAN he do it? I think not. Despite all the negative posts at DU, I see many signs that the day of reckoning is on its way, and it's going to be really something!

The recent change in tone is likely directly related to testimony and evidence so far collected by the Jan. 6 committee. While only the willfully blind can't see the coup, having a solid case with evidence and testimony before making the change in tone is proper and particularly important if you are Mr. President guy. No doubt DoJ is keeping a proper distance from politicians and not passing any information to Biden about their investigations.

They know what is going to be revealed between now and the election, and what indictments are likely to drop. More than a few Republicans are cooperating and reporting to others how much the committee already knows. One of the things they are reporting is surprise at how much was already known to their questioners.

In the 2020 election there were scores of swing voters who voted for Biden for president and then voted Republican for Congress. This has the potential of making the whole party repugnant to these voters, where they will vote Democrat or stay home. If the committee can show the pervasiveness of the involvement from members of Congress and the administration in the breach of the Capitol.

18 U.S. Code § 4 - Misprision of felony

Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

And this applies to any person who had knowledge of the coup plan. Those persons who are being asked to testify to the Jan. 6 committee who had direct knowledge face quite the conundrum because they may have to admit to this felony if they knew a crime was in progress, and saying "I thought the election was stolen" is no excuse.

" To impose the will of the mob, to overturn free and fair election, and for the first time, the first time in American history, to stop the peaceful transfer of power. They failed, they failed, but democracy’s victory was not certain nor is democracy’s future.” "

...did you ever expect during your lifetime to hear a President utter words like these?

...scrapping the filibuster is chickenshit child's play compared to saving our democracy...a filibuster is meaningless without a democracy...

...every patriotic Democrat, every patriotic Republican, every patriotic American, should be prepared to do what's right and necessary to save our democracy...

"...democracy’s victory was not certain nor is democracy’s future."

...when a President gives a heads-up warning like this, you'd better pay attention because it's big-time serious...
