(55,911 posts)I would expect the relevant statute or the reality of getting a conviction to require some meaningful preparation or actions that clearly demonstrate an intent to follow through.
Unless she had half a million in cash in her car, or had been stalking this family, it sounds too easy to say it was just a joke or in any event that she wasn't serious about actually doing it.
I think it's possible that she was *probably* serious, but i don't beyond a reasonable doubt.
Again, the video and other facts may uncover supporting evidence, so and arrest and investigation seems appropriate. Just saying I don't see a conviction as of yet.

(54,026 posts)Surely not a joke or half-witted idea. Something more went on there.
Passing it off as a prank or undoable because she didn't have the cash and should know that she didn't
sounds like the Belfour defense, an athlete who famously according to online reports in his inebriated state offered Texas officers a 'billion' dollars not to arrest him.

(55,911 posts)But convictions often require more than just speech.
People sometimes say things like, "I could just kill that person"; that's unlikely to get a conviction unless there's evidence of intent to act on that threat. It's an idle threat without it.
This is where the video might shed light. If she talked about how she could make payment, that might be enough. If she pulled out her phone and said "see I've got the money in my bank account, just tell me where to wire it", that would certainly be enough I would think.

(14,577 posts)I searched and can't find anywhere that tells me she is a wealthy person. To have half a million cash floating around kind of wealthy.
You have to be mentally ill to think that this plan might work even if you had the money. That you'd be able to find a mother willing to sell their child. And not only that, but even if you were able to find a mother that cold hearted, the mother would have to trust this stranger woman enough to begin the transaction, to trust she actually had it and ask to see it. Imagine betraying your own child like that, only to find out she was just sick and broke after all. To even entertain the idea in the first place, the mother would also have to be mentally unstable.

(40,915 posts)It just seems unlikely that someone who thought she could buy a baby would actually have a half million dollars.

(22,208 posts)According to the article posted by pack man, the would be baby buyer claimed to have $250,000 in her car! The whole thing is incredibly weird, any way you slice it.
That article also mentioned another woman who was with the baby buyer. If she can be located and is willing to cooperate (or can be induced to do so), she could be a useful witness:
