Russia, China push back against US in pre-Olympics summit

Source: AP

By KEN MORITSUGU

BEIJING (AP) — The leaders of Russia and China pushed back against U.S. pressure on Friday, declaring their opposition to any expansion of NATO and affirming that the island of Taiwan is a part of China, as they met hours before the Winter Olympics kicked off in Beijing.

Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping issued a joint statement highlighting what it called “interference in the internal affairs” of other states, as both leaders face criticism from Washington over their foreign and domestic policies.

“Some forces representing a minority on the world stage continue to advocate unilateral approaches to resolving international problems and resort to military policy,” it read, in a thinly veiled reference to the U.S. and its allies.

The two leaders are looking to project themselves as a counterweight to the U.S.-led bloc, as China growingly shows support for Moscow in its dispute with Ukraine that threatens to break out into armed conflict.

I was expecting them to weigh in on this but for it to be after the Olympics so as not to overshadow the games. Them announcing this on day one leaves no doubt where they stand.

and hell, why can't we all get along. The Pandemic doesn't care if you are Russian, Chinese or Americans. It doesn't care if you are white, it kills and causes much suffering to everyone.

Kumbaya yolks. Since the GQP want to turn back to the past how about some 1960's.

Decrying a nation "resorting to military policy" while Russia masses troops on the Ukrainian border and China is building artificial islands to act as military bases.

Wow. Shitbags galore.

If Bush Sr had the guts to revoke most favored nation status over Tiananmen Square and other abuses instead of keeping open a way for oil interests (like his own family's) where would the world be today?

Imagine a democracy in China -- rather than a dictator. What pressure would that have put on Russia to prevent Putin from becoming a dictator as well.

But -- cheap goods and labor and a place to sell all that Texas oil was more important than freedom or long term national security interests.

Before the Communists, it was a military dictatorship

Before that, it was an imperial dictatorship.

From my long time in China (and going back) knowing the people of China, it wouldn't survive. The Confucian idea of society being a bee colony where everything is decided by the queen and the workers support the hive is extremely strong.
