Crowds clash with the police as arrests continue (Ottawa)

Twenty-two days after a trucker convoy rumbled into Canada’s capital to protest pandemic restrictions, hundreds of police in downtown Ottawa moved in to arrest protesters Friday, hoping to end weeks of gridlock that have roiled the city, infuriated local residents and shaken the country.

After a night of unusually heavy snowfall, rows of police officers in fluorescent jackets were seen steadily edging toward protesters on Parliament Hill, backed by at least two armored vehicles, and tactical officers armed with rifles and wearing helmets.

By late afternoon, protesters were clashing with police officers in front of Canada’s Senate building. The Ottawa police said that some demonstrators had assaulted officers and tried to remove their weapons. The police deployed crowd-dispersal spray against demonstrators, and officers on horseback were forcing the crowd back, leading to a rush of people try to fleeing in a flood of panic.

Images on Canadian television showed police officers dragging one recalcitrant protester on the snowy ground near a truck draped with a Canadian flag.

Protesters are assaulting police officers and police horses during efforts to end the three-week occupation in downtown Ottawa, police say.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, Interim Ottawa police Chief Steve Bell credited the federal Emergencies Act, Ontario state of emergency and local state of emergency and injunction for providing tools to help officers deal with protesters.

Then in a series of tweets issued Friday evening, Ottawa police said officers were being assaulted as they tried to dismantle the occupation, as well as dealing with attempts by protesters to take officers' weapons.

Police said mounted officers were used to "create critical space" between protesters and police, and while doing so, one person allegedly threw a bicycle at one of the horses. That person was arrested.
