Harris warns Russia of unprecedented sanctions if it invades

MUNICH (AP) — U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris warned Russia on Saturday that it will face “unprecedented” financial costs if it invades Ukraine and predicted that such an attack would draw European allies closer to the United States.

Harris spoke at the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany the day after President Joe Biden said he’s “convinced” that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to invade the neighboring country.

“Let me be clear, can say with absolute certainty: If Russia further invades Ukraine, the United States, together with our allies and partners, will impose significant, and unprecedented economic costs,” Harris said.

The vice president aimed to make the case to a largely European audience that the West has “strength through unity” and that an invasion would likely lead to an even bigger NATO footprint on Russia’s doorsteps.

inside, anything made with US technology, including intellectual property, would be banned for export into Russia. No more iPhones, game consoles, computers. In other words they would be in the dark technology wise. This alone would be a major blow to their economy & society as a whole.

Russia supplies about a third of the world's palladium, a rare metal used in catalytic converters so expect more disruptions in auto manufacturing & higher prices. Russia/Ukraine is also a major fertilizer supplier so food prices around the world would go up, again
Ukraine is a major source of neon, which is used in manufacturing semiconductors so this could be another disruption to semiconductor and aerospace industries

The U.S. has decided to hold off on at least one of the most crushing financial options available to punish Russia if it invades Ukraine, Deputy National Economic Council Director Daleep Singh told reporters at a White House briefing Friday.

Booting Russia out of the SWIFT financial system that moves money around the world was one of the most damaging steps the U.S. could take against the Russian economy, but it is opposed by some European allies for the spillover damage it would cause to their economies as well.

Singh described sanctions against Russian financial institutions and state-owned enterprises, as well as U.S. export controls that would deny Russia advanced technology it seeks for its industry and military.

At a time of high oil and gas prices, the U.S. also did not intend to try to block Russian energy from reaching global markets, he said, but gave no details.
