Russian Invasion of Ukraine Meets Stiff Resistence
Source: CNN
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is encountering "stiffer than expected" resistance from the Ukrainian military as well as unexpected difficulties supplying its forces, two senior US officials with direct knowledge tell CNN.
On the battlefield: Russia is suffering heavier losses in personnel and armor and aircraft than expected. This is due in part to the fact that Ukrainian air defenses have performed better than pre-invasion US intelligence assessments had anticipated.
In the air: In addition, Russia has yet to establish air supremacy over Ukraine, a senior defense official said, as the Ukrainian Air Force and air defense systems fight for control of the airspace.
"Ukrainian air defenses, including aircraft, do continue to be operable and continue to engage and deny access to Russian aircraft in places over the country," the official said.
Without uncontested control of the skies, it becomes more difficult for an army on the move to see and strike targets from the air.

Putin certainly did not expect these consequences. Not only military, but world wide as well . I think Putin thought this
would be a. ."Cake Walk" but it is something else. I haven't got a clue how it will end..

(4,444 posts)Russia still has a very, very capable air force. Ours is spread thin. Ukraine is going to have to fight - good luck.

(12,686 posts)But jet fuel requires a lighter grade crude oil and heavily processed even then, while most Russian oil is heavy crude, good for diesel. With the sanctions, they don't have a lot of jet fuel in reserve.
They didn't think they had to use their jets because they expected the Ukrainians to roll over like they did in Crimea. They thought they'd just be mopping up by now.

(26,341 posts)With the full invasion though of the entire country they will have a harder time and hopefully the Ukrainians can hold them off long enough for the Russians to give up due to cost in manpower and materials and the weight of the sanctions.
Sanctions which should not be reduced until Russia withdraws from all the the land its tried to steal.

(4,552 posts)It is one of the reasons russia left Afghanistan. I sure hope we are giving Ukraine stingers.
When a single man on the ground can take out a jet fighter the field is leveled.
I agree that Ukraine is not going to roll over on this one. They don't want russian control.

(4,372 posts)That armored vehicle was part of a Russian convoy and a gun battle with the Ukrainians (outside of that video's range) was raging all around. I'm happy to report that the people in the vehicle survived and are OK. The Russian convoy Including that Russian armored vehicle, well let's just they were all neutralized. I actually saw many videos of the battle from different angles.

(13,074 posts)The madman was emboldened by how easy that was and now thinks he can bowl over Ukrainians. They, and the world, are giving him a united f-you. Hopefully the good Russian people do too and force him out of power. He needs to be tried for crimes against humanity.

Putin's plan was to overrun Ukraine in short order, then "negotiate". It wasn't to negotiate with a Ukraine that has managed to stalemate him.
