World Court orders Russia to cease military operations in Ukraine
Source: Reuters
REUTERS AMSTERDAM, March 16 (Reuters) - The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Russia on Wednesday to stop the military actions it started in Ukraine on Feb. 24. "The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend the military operations that it commenced on Feb 24, 2022 in the territory of Ukraine," the judges said. The judges added Russia must also ensure that other forces under its control or supported by Moscow should not continue the military operation. 12. Anyone violating the order is subject to war crimes prosecution. Won't happen today, however ...
take the case of Serbia for example, in due course war criminals were prosecuted and punished. Sadly, some of them run the country today after killing democracy and we should learn from that trajectory the importance of prosecuting all of them, not just the leader.

It was only a matter of time before we got a Spiked! article decrying the ICC in relation to war criminal Putin. In fact identical arguments were made in 1999 about Milosevic. Yet after his ousting, his own people handed him over to The Hague, although he died during the trial. Link to tweet |

If Russians get sufficiently fed up with Putin, it is not out of the question that he could be turned over to face war crimes charges. Right now, it does only add to the official response and record, but given the propaganda war being waged, that is helpful |

and lose its UN Security Council vote
Also they would need to give Karelia and Ingria back to Finland, give Pskov back to Estonia, and give back whatever other territory was seized by the Soviet Union in the 1940s and beyond. |

18. 'Stop this war immediately': NATO chief tells Putin, says military alliance has been strengthened
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to "immediately" stop the war in Ukraine, adding that his efforts to undermine the alliance had failed.
"President Putin must stop this war immediately [and] engage in diplomacy in good faith," Stoltenberg said at an extraordinary meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, Belgium. At the same time, he said the military alliance had agreed to double down on its support for Ukraine, providing further military supplies, financial help and humanitarian aid. Stoltenberg said that member states would expand their defenses across land, air, sea and space in response to the "new reality for our security," and applauded new financing commitments from Germany and Denmark. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/stop-this-war-immediately-nato-chief-tells-putin-says-military-alliance-has-been-strengthened/ar-AAV8UwX |

28. Hoisted with their own petard
Chickenshit Russia declined to appear at the Hague to defend themselves, but had sent a letter on March 7th with a response. The Court (with 15 judges; that's how many the US needs now) went through the requirements of jurisdiction which enabled them to make a provisional ruling. They cited numerous times the Russian representative had appeared before the UN to seek action on Ukraine, what they said about various matters, and therefore concluded, amongst other things, that they did indeed have jurisdiction to hear the case, that all the criteria required for the case had been considered and that it passed muster.
By a vote of 13 to 2, the ICJ ordered Russia to cease and desist all of what it's doing (making war in Ukraine.) Ukraine won all of what it asked the Court to do. It seemed that there was more to consider, but Ukraine had only asked the Court to make a judgment on the genocide aspect of the war, under that treaty (or whatever it is.) While the ICJ can't exactly order any physical reaction to the war, this is a huge victory for Ukraine in the court of international opinion, and will set the stage for hauling Putin and his cronies off to jail. I am hoping that the UN kicks Russia out of the UN. The decision today might possibly set the framework for that (?) as the UN is getting fed up. I know that it might set a precedent for actions against each other, but they can't get any work done on this issue with Russia having a veto. It is absurd to think that one nation can interfere with the vote on what it itself is doing. They should be required to abstain. They are probably not holding the chair legitimately, anyway. This has tainted all the decisions made with them as a member, and certainly will going forward. This is an important provisional decision today. More to come. |

34. At least we can stop hearing about "investigation into possible war crimes" and other whitewashing
that is constantly used, despite the fact that anyone with a television set can see with their own eyes this genocidal horror. Russia needs to immediately cease and withdraw, or it is automatically indicted with war crimes; no drawn out investigation necessary.
Does Putin care? I doubt it, but his generals, ministers, advisors, and oligarchs certainly might. Perhaps it would be a good time for broadcast television to replay the movie, "Judgment at Nuremberg." Maybe Anonymous can get it aired on Russian TV, with Russian subtitles. |
