France’s Macron projected to win presidency, holding off Le Pen’s far-right threat to upend Europe and relations with Russia

By Rick Noack, Michael Birnbaum and Elie Petit

Today at 2:00 a.m. EDT | Updated today at 2:02 p.m. EDT

PARIS — Emmanuel Macron is projected to become the first French president in two decades to win a second term, holding off a far-right challenge by Marine Le Pen that could have upended Europe. Macron won 58 percent of the vote and Le Pen 42 percent in the initial projected results released by France’s public broadcaster.

Macron’s likely victory offers continuity for France and another five years of political stability for the 27-nation European Union, which has been buffeted by years of challenges from far-right populists, Brexit, an immigration crisis, and now Russia’s war in Ukraine. France and Germany are the pillars of the bloc, and policymakers in capitals across the continent had been watching the election with anxiety.

Despite Le Pen’s apparent defeat, Sunday’s projections were the best result the far-right has ever received in a French presidential election. A win by Le Pen, 53, would have put an anti-immigrant populist who has expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin in charge of the European Union’s second-biggest economy and its only nuclear power. It would have also replaced a fervent E.U. defender with a fierce critic of the bloc.

while Le Pen is still his tool.

One hopes France can come up with someone in the next election who will trounce LePen so thoroughly she'll go back to whatever she did before entering politics. I'm not surprised by the number of abstentions, Macron is not popular and inflation is not helping. At least more people realized Le Pen wouldn't be able to do anything about that, either.

The whole world has been on a printed money, low interest bender. Time for the hangover. At least it will be easier to take without Le Pen banging her bigotry drum in their ears.

Keeping that in mind when I see and read "low polling numbers" for Biden.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_2022_French_presidential_election#Graphical_summary_2

The polling average (for a Macron/Le Pen runoff) got as close as 53% Macron, 47% Le Pen around the time of the first round; by the last polls, it had widened to 56%/44%. Melenchon's strong urging for his voters to never vote for Le Pen may have helped.
