Poll: Majority of N.J. voters support gay marriage

TRENTON — As Democrats are making a legislative push for same-sex marriage, a poll released this morning shows that a majority of New Jersey voters supports the measure.

Fifty-two percent of Garden State voters think same-sex couples should have the right to marry, while 42 percent think they should not.

It’s the first time support for gay marriage has topped 50 percent in a Quinnipiac poll. The previous high was in April 2009, when 49 percent said they supported it.

“Democrats are making same-sex marriage their big opening issue and New Jersey voters support them,” said poll director Maurice Carroll. “There are demographic splits – Catholics are more supportive than Protestants. All groups support same-sex civil unions. Most groups support allowing same-sex couples to adopt children, while black voters are divided on that issue.”

But before we get there, we need to pass the bill and next Tuesday is the Judiciary hearing. Expect more votes in favor than there were in 2009.

Also, we currently have a lawsuit working its way through the courts. Once we pass our marriage equality bill in the Senate and Assembly, it will show legislative intent and bolster our lawsuit.
