Manchin pushes for his gun reform bill in wake of Buffalo mass shooting

Source: The Hill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Monday reiterated his support for legislation aimed at expanding gun background checks while also calling for “mental illness reform” in the wake of the weekend’s mass shooting in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo.

Manchin cited the bipartisan legislation he and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) first brought up years back when pressed by The Hill on Monday about recent calls made by lawmakers for gun reform in the days since the Saturday shooting, which left 10 people dead and three wounded.

“We can’t even get Manchin-Toomey, which didn’t violate anyone’s rights. It just said there should not be a commercial transaction unless there’s a background check,” Manchin said. “It’s the most, I think it’s the most agreed upon, it’s the most accepted in the country and we can’t even get that done.”

“So, I don’t even know what to expect. Are we going to another vote for the sake of taking a vote? Let’s do some mental illness reform. My goodness,” he said, before emphasizing he is “for Manchin-Toomey.”

That's on HIM. HE needs 10 Republicans to go along in order to invoke cloture. Otherwise, because of him and Sinemea, even HIS bill will go nowhere.

If all 50 Demcrats vote for it including him, that leaves 49 Republicans who would normally vote no (with Teabagger Toomey being a single vote as a co-sponsor). Because. Reasons. He might be able to pull a handful of others, but the GOP is generally no-holds barred "2A RULEZ" folks.

and this isn't the first time he's championed some kind of gun reform...after Sandy Hook he advocated for background checks knowing full well the measure would fail..in 2021 he refused to support two gun control bills the House had passed...Manchin's "push" for gun safety is nothing more than veneer...superficial but looks pretty...

...& who voted in favor of the NRA, dating back to the Brady Bill.

Manchin was hardly the only problem.
Unfortunately those who repeatedly voted against the Brady Bill conditions, some as often as 5 times, gave the NRA the power they have now.

Bought, lobbied & secured that favor for the NRA.

with mental illness to justify an evil act. My daughter has paranoia. If we, as a country, spent more time/money on mental health care and less on weapons of war, we would be in a far better place.

He made threats the year before and it was cleared. No one monitored his online manifesto. Until he did the deed he didn't trip any mental illness wires. Manchin is just posturing, and living in the past.

Did have mental illness that wasn't the primary cause in this massacre. Hate was. This kind of deflection is not helpful. And the message of hate just got a big boost today when Twitter, under Musk, allowed Trump back on the platform. Future to the back it is. Sweep hate under the rug and blame it all on mental illness.

I wish people would stop using mental illness as a cover-all for everyone a-hole that does this.

They aren't mentally ill. They are narcissistic a-holes.

He feeds off of being the center of attention.

Hopefully, we will replace Toomey in PA with a Democrat. It may be the beginning of rendering him irrelevant.

I don't fear him becoming an official Republican because it removes his current power to be a pain in the ass.

had it with the guy. He's not trustworthy and would never be interested in doing the down and dirty work of getting weapons of war off our streets and out of our grocery stores, churches and schools. Manchin coddling is downright sickening. I hope somehow we manage to pick up a few Senate seats in November to derail his power trip.
