'All of a sudden, shots went off': 2 dead, 8 wounded in shooting outside McDonald's, CTA station

Source: Chicago Tribune

A mass shooting that started with a brawl among a group of teens has left two people dead and eight wounded late Thursday, blocks from the Magnificent Mile, according to Chicago police, who say they have one person in custody.

An additional victim had suffered burns, possibly from being injured on the nearby CTA Red Line subway, according to a witness and a Chicago Fire Dept. spokesman.

The shooting happened about 10:40 p.m. in the 800 block of North State Street outside the Chicago Avenue subway station and a McDonald’s at 10 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago police said in a media notification.

As of early Friday, police have arrested one person and recovered a gun from the scene of the attack. The dead have not been identified yet and police released no further details about the victims.

West Side Neighborhood Sees 58% Drop In Shootings Thanks To Violence Prevention Programs, Outreach Workers Say

GARFIELD PARK — Shootings have dropped in West Side neighborhoods this year, showing prevention and intervention programs are working, advocates said.

Shootings are down more than 15 percent citywide compared to this time last year, according to an analysis by street outreach organization Chicago CRED. West Side neighborhoods have seen even more dramatic improvements: Austin has had a 38 percent decrease in shootings compared to last year, and shootings in West Garfield Park have dropped by almost one-third.

The progress is even more promising in North Lawndale, showing a nearly 57 percent drop in shootings, according to CRED data.

The public safety improvements follow increases in state, federal and local funding for community-driven anti-violence strategies, including Gov. JB Pritzker committing $50 million this year to support violence intervention.

I would put this article in LBN but I'm thinking it's too local to be considered LBN or there will be some other complaint about why I can't post it here. I like to post some positive things people are doing.

about violence in Chicago. Sometimes, the good news just isn't sexy enough. It is helpful to have some balance.

I moved here a year ago and I’m still incredulous at the behavior of significant numbers of them. The near all out riot at Millennium Park and nearby parts of downtown last weekend was horrible. They changed curfew for teens to 10:00 as a result. I practically want the curfew to be dusk. It was absolutely insane. There are serious quality of life issues here with some of these gangs of kids.

….and the homeless too…I was walking down the street a couple weeks ago after grabbing a Starbucks and heading back to the office when a random bum charged at me and tried to take a swing. Luckily, I was alert and I ducked so he only grazed my hair….I could have taken out his legs from that position, but I did not because once I do that, I need to be all in and I would have needed to beat and kick him in the ribs until he stopped moving to remove the threat. Another choice would be to hold him in a bear hug until the police arrive - disgusting. I opted to just keep walking and ducked into my office a block away, but he remained a threat to others.

Since the right likes to point out gun crime in Chicago, that makes it a talking point that can be ignored, as the mere fact they like to being it up means all gun crime in Chicago no longer counts and we can ignore the topic and shut down the debate.

That is a great way to win debates. If the other side likes to keep bringing up a point, say the point doesn’t count because the other side likes to bring it up.

"What about all the poor people? It proves (enter social safety net policy here) doesn't work and needs to be eliminated!"

"What about Chicago? It proves gun control doesn't work because if criminals don't care if there are gun laws. Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns." (this can be simply countered by saying "why have any laws at all? Thieves, murderers, and white collar criminals don't care if there is a law also. Why have those illegal?&quot

Deflect, gaslight, avoid, and lie. Their four main attacks.

is now settled by semi-automatic handguns.

Young men should not have unsupervised access to powerful firearms. I don't care how responsible YOU were as a child; young men shooting guns because they're angry is the common theme, repeated over and over again every week in this armed madhouse.
