HAVANA/WASHINGTON, May 20 (Reuters) - Biden administration officials are considering inviting a Cuban representative to the U.S.-hosted Summit of the Americas, a person familiar with the matter said, as Washington scrambled to head off a potentially embarrassing boycott by some regional leaders.
Discussion has focused on allowing a Cuban presence at the next month's Los Angeles summit below the level of the country's president or foreign minister, but it is at an early stage and no decision has been made, the source told Reuters on Friday.
President Joe Biden's aides were weighing the idea as his administration began sending out invitations for the summit. But for now U.S. officials declined to say what countries were on the list or whether the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua would be excluded. read more
A growing number of leaders, including Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, have threatened to skip the summit unless all countries in the region are allowed to attend.

Our being 'pissed-off' at Castro does NOTHING to help those that are generations away from his regime. It is a marvelous opportunity to show the people of Cuba and the world that the USA CAN be a place and a people that cares about ALL people......

(6,103 posts)I am so sick of this Cuban shit. When I was a kid I was in Miami during the Cuban revolution we met some really great people who came over. It's time that we forget all this fucking Batista worship and Castro hate. Open Cuba up and treat them as part of the Americas.

(4,298 posts)Her parents left their home and business to come here. They hated Castro. She said that she and her brother and sister longed to go back to Cuba just to see what it had become and to visit grandparents and other relatives. Her parents were not on speaking terms with many of their relatives who chose to stay. Short story...her parents threatened to disinherit her or either of her siblings if they ever went back to Cuba. She said her parents lost what was in Cuba but were pretty well-off having investments here and money stashed her for decades. They are very conservative, dislike poorer and browner Cubans. Parents are Cuban Jews who only identify as Cuban, live in FL and have extended family in the DC metro area. Weird. Just another conservative family in America. Oh, yeah, they absolutely did not want any part of the Mariel boatlift to be able to stay in the US. No words.
