Pelosi pushes back on archbishop who denies her Communion
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed back Tuesday on the decision by San Francisco's conservative Catholic archbishop to deny her Communion over her support of abortion rights, saying she respects that people have opposing views but not when they impose them on others.
The California Democrat says she comes from a large family with many members who oppose abortion. I respect peoples views about that. But I dont respect us foisting it onto others. Pelosi added, Our archbishop has been vehemently against LGBTQ rights. In fact he led the way in an initiative on the ballot in California.
Pelosi made her comments on MSNBCs Morning Joe. In a letter last week to Pelosi, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said he would refuse her Communion after she vowed to codify into law the Supreme Courts Roe vs. Wade decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. That legislation passed the House but died last week in the Senate.
Pelosi said women and families need to know this is about more than abortion. These same people are against contraception, family planning, in vitro fertilization. Its a blanket thing and they use abortion as the front man for it.

(13,209 posts)Catholic doctrine, written by men, opposes abortion and every Catholic woman is free to follow the teachings of the church and refuse contraception and abortion. That is their freedom of choice. The church, however, is not free to insist that all women must abide by its theology, denying them freedom of choice.

(88,935 posts)It's always been about money ever since I can remember - like back to early grades in Catholic school.
ALWAYS about money. ALWAYS raising money. ALWAYS sending us out selling Holy Childhood Christmas stamps, Catholic magazine subscriptions, candy drives, bake sales, wrapping paper sales, "Adopt a Pagan Baby" drives, fundraising of ANY AND ALL sorts. They were ALWAYS shakin' down the faithful. They NEVER quit. I sometimes wondered why somebody hadn't suggested turning each of us over and hanging us by our heels as we entered church so the money would fall out of our pockets.
The most mercenary outfit I've ever been witness to. It was ALWAYS about money.
This is overt political activity. I would support a ballot proposition in CA to codify what activities go against tax exempt status for non-profit orgs. Then, I'd start hitting them one by one.
First up: The Archdiocese of S.F. Kill their tax exempt status for all but their humanitarian programs. https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/941498472
Their CEO makes almost $300k per year. The other officers are over $200k each.
Fuck. Them.

(66,648 posts)When I've previously called for churches to be taxed, both here and on wider social media, I've been scolded that "churches do good, charitable work" and "my neighborhood church can't afford to keep the lights on as it is."
Well, that's a damn shame. Tax them all and let God sort it out.
Let them file and write off their charitable activities, which I'm sure will be clearly documented to the penny. And if their taxes are so onerous that they have to close up shop? Too bad. I've known people who've had to relocate or downsize or file bankruptcy due to their tax burden; there is absolutely no reason at all why a church should get an exemption.
Organized religion exists--and has always existed--for one reason: to amass more wealth in pursuit of political power in order to amass more wealth.
TAX. THE. CHURCH.

(6,863 posts)some churches run legitimate non-profits. Those soup-kitchens and housing/work helpers shouldn't be affected. Otherwise i completely agree.

If they are legitimate non-profits, let them reaffirm their tax-exempt status annually or quarterly or monthly.
Mechanisms exist to catch fraud when its a single mom under-reporting her tips as a part-time waitress. Surely theres some way to identify multi-million dollar fraud by mega church hucksters while still allowing a tiny soup kitchen to continue operating.

(6,863 posts)they reaffirm quarterly. Often they are audited annually. I'm just saying that the ones that are LEGITIMATE shouldn't be punished because they are church affiliated.

(66,648 posts)If they're legitimate, then let them dissolve their association with the church. Otherwise, tax them.
Funny how some non-profits can rake in millions tax-free simply because they pretend to be churches, while the mighty IRS can somehow do nothing about but stand by and deploy more agents to audit low-five-figure earners.

(6,863 posts)my local soup kitchen could no longer serve the homeless. It's run out of the UU church kitchen and basement... you can't really "dissolve their association". Here i say to you NOTHING is absolute. You trying to cram every freaking church into the BAD BAD BAD people frame... ALWAYS, ignores the precious few who should be encouraged to continue their good works. You know there are actual "Samaritans" out here in the world? There are a lot of non-profits that were started and exist because of a religious conviction (Habitat4Humanity anyone?) Just because you don't believe in a Skyfather, doesn't mean other people can't and won't. I will reiterate... if it's a legitimate Non-profit it should be allowed to exist, church affiliated or not. I am agreeing that we should tax the churches. But i think you are gut reacting here and overreaching. But whatever, man.

(66,648 posts)Churches have enjoyed unjustifiably privileged tax exempt status for far too long. Tax them and let them write off their charitable work, but simply being a church is no justification for tax exemption, nor should hosting a periodic soup kitchen absolve them of their property tax. Likewise, the existence of a charitable program shouldnt excuse the church from taxation overall. I might as readily claim tax exempt status because I once hosted a charitable bake sale in the name of Mighty Mouse.
Im not saying that all churches are bad; Im saying that all churches should be taxed. Taxation is not punitive; its an obligation. Equally, tax exemption isnt a reward; its a privilege.

(6,151 posts)no denying communion to those holding pro choice beliefs as in Biden case.
Archbishop is defying the Pope and his edict.
So Archbishop is bad Catholic and should be denied communion. Not Pelosi.
Just another do as I say, not as I do.
I can just imagine the Pope's phone call to Father Corleone there:
"You listen to me, la puta qué te parió: Speaker Pelosi is a good Catholic - and above all, a good person. I don't want to hear any more cose cattivi from you - capisce?"
"Yes, Your Holiness."
"Va bene."

(9,713 posts)And deny them communion too. As if the state murdering a man is any different in the Church's eyes than the feticide he condemns Pelosi for.
Another right wing lunatic in a 16th century costume trying to play politics in the guise of being a clergyman. Sinner, repent.

Im sure she could find one of his churches that would give her communion. Or she could just tell him the pope doesnt approve of his attitude. Or she could come over to Oakland. The bishop here has a ginormous crystal cathedral. Very photogenic.

instead he tweeted and wrote a letter !!!! Is he trying to shame her publicly? I had nuns who loved to shame. He even has the nerve to quote to pope in his first paragraph. The Pope himself said he would never deny communion to anyone.

That was one of the major concerns about placing Roman Catholics in high office positions.
Their beliefs or undue influence by the church would be used to manipulate them.
It seems that this is coming to fruition.

(12,872 posts)The archbishop is saying that any Catholic politician who does not take their marching orders from Church does so at the peril of their soul.
The point that JFK made is lost. Unless a Catholic politician has publicly defied the Church, like Madam Speaker, we must assume that a vote for a Catholic politician is a vote for their bishop.
I am descended from Scottish covenanters and Orange Irish and have no standing to give the Pope advise - but - if this archbishop is not summoned to Rome for "consultations" the Pope is endangering the role of Catholics in American politics.
