Gov. Abbott cancels NRA trip, will travel to Uvalde instead

Source: Houston Chronicle

Gov. Greg Abbott is canceling his appearance at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston on Friday, days after a gunman killed 21 people, including 19 children, at a Uvalde elementary school.

The governor faced heavy criticism for his decision to attend the event following the massacre. He was scheduled to speak alongside former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, but he will now deliver “pre-recorded video remarks,” Abbott spokesman Mark Miner said.

Instead, Abbott will travel to Uvalde for another press conference on “state resources available for those impacted by the Robb Elementary School shooting.” The event will take place at 3:30 p.m., shortly after the governor was set to address NRA attendees.

It will be Abbott’s second news conference in Uvalde after Tuesday’s shooting. During the first on Wednesday, Abbott rejected any efforts to restrict gun access, instead saying lawmakers should focus on expanding mental health resources in rural areas.

Instead he decides to stage another feel good press conference where he toots his own horn and blames anything but the easy access the murderer had to a weapon which is so deadly the police were scared to confront the murderer while he slaughtered innocent children.

Good luck spinning that into something less horrific, Abbott.

We'll need someone to catch a video. I want to see him sweat while he lies all over again or maybe he'll let one of his sidekicks do the sweating for him while he tries to look important.

What a jerk.

I've lived in this district off and on since 1994. It was even red when it was under the Federal Voting Rights Act. I had Bonilla (ugh) as my congressman forever, then I had Ciro Rodriguez (D) for two terms, then Canseco (horrible) for one term. In 2011 got put into Castro's (CD20) district. During that time CD 23 went for Gallego (D) 2012-2014. But it's been red ever since.

Now I got redistricted back into it because I live in a red precinct. Castro has no more red precincts, every red precinct was put into Tony Gonzales district. Every blue precinct was removed from CD 23.

I testified several times in the red districting hearings, but my words fell on deaf ears. I hate this huge district.

The Democratic outreach has been along with Rio Grande Border and urban areas. The South Texas plains and Hill County (where Uvalde is located) have always been red.

The South Texas plains is the home of the King Ranch (not Uvalde, King has their own county, but you get the idea). Uvalde is sort of a scene out of John Wayne movie.

Uvalde is rural and hence red. There is a big Aggie influence. They have the Uvalde Center over there. Heck we even had Christian prayer at a govt event. (What was I gonna do. File a lawsuit LOL?) I used to be a Master Gardener and those Aggie people are red. They do alot of good things in Uvalde, but the politics is red.

Also many citizens over there are employed by Border Patrol etc.

The area is sparsely populated. The Latino population has been there for generations. However, they tend to be redneck and rural. They like their trucks. And they are also armed. One girl who survived the shooting, keeps waking up at night, wishing she had her father's gun to attack the shooter.

The GOP must have decided to show a little compassion.
But it won't last long. They know most of the public will get over this by November.
