Democratic Rep. Judy Chu Arrested At Abortion Rights Protest Outside U.S. Capitol

Source: Yahoo!

Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) was arrested Thursday for participating in an abortion rights protest outside the U.S. Capitol in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Chu was among 181 people the Capitol Police arrested for “for blocking the intersection of Constitution Avenue, NE and First Street, NE,” which is also near the Supreme Court.

“When I think of all these women — and more — the decision to join in a peaceful demonstration to make clear we will not allow the clock to be rolled back on abortion rights was easy,” Chu said in a statement. “We are in this together and we will not back down or be silenced.”

The protest was organized by the Center for Popular Democracy Action and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, according to The Washington Post. It comes nearly a week after the high court delivered its verdict on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case centered around a Mississippi law banning abortion at 15 weeks.

does bring up the possibility of "second amendment solutions"

per republican candidate sharron angle's senate campaign in 2011.

and 1/6 verifies that violence is now a legitimate political tactic supported by almost all republican representatives.

for the record, i'm incapable of any sort of violence. it takes all my courage just to step on ants in my garage.

i watch for squirrels and chipmunks crossing the road when i drive in my rural town. because it would make me cry if i ran over one, cute little stupid guys.

is because Texas hasn't cared about the health of pregnant women for decades.

should have had weapons. The cops would have been afraid to do anything. They seem to like arresting unarmed marchers, not violent, armed, right wing rioters who attack democratic institutions. So brave those 'protectors of social order'.

It was pre-arranged by planned parenthood. There was no threat to the officers nor those arrested. The only downside was the extra time needed to process the paperwork.

So glad LE stepped up to the plate. Women with signs need to be stopped no matter what it takes.

Always ready to stand off and sweep up peaceful protesters calling for action popular both on the left and among the populace at large. They know what's really dangerous around a government building. Good to see they've got their groove back....

Please do not confuse this with the assault on the Capitol on 1/6 they have nothing in common. These people came to get arrested to raise awareness of the injustice of the current court. The arrests are per-arranged with the Capitol Police and the press. they are released immediately after processing as long as there are no other charges. Lets not have a temper tantrum over how the Capitol Police do their job when peaceful protestors are asking to be arrested.

Civil Disobedience is a great tool to call out injustice. The outrage of some here is what is amusing to me. Planned Parenthood was signing people up to get arrested and were sending out press releases. They wanted to break a record for most women arrested. Then people are outraged when they get arrested.

There are many other peaceful protests with mass arrests, unwarranted arrests, not provoked by civil disobedience.

The police are suited up like a military operation or protestors are terrorists.

The salient point, is when we did have domestic terrorists, armed to the effin teeth, pre built Gallows with a noose etc etc etc

police were woefully unprepared, not suited up like they were in this instance.

huge, huge contrast is the point of the outrage.

The cops are wearing yellow hi-res vests, suited up like a military operation……cry me a River. Everyone has a roll to play in this. The USCP did exactly what they were supposed to do. The protestors did exactly what they wanted to do. Everyone accomplished their goals. I one was hurt. Press attention was gained.

Everyone who was there got what they wanted to get

Yet the keyboard commandos need their outrage

This is the good trouble that Congressman Lewis talked about. The outrage at the cops for doing their job is just silly.

Your tone isn't clear.

Rosa Parks was part of an organized,
planned process to get attention and
arrested if necessary. It doesn't
mean what she did was invalid.
The whole point was to get attention
for sitting up front in the bus.
It worked, along with other efforts.

They were not dragging people off by their hair, hoses and dogs, beatings. They lined them up and arrested them at their request. This was not Selma.

The Capitol Police are not the bad guy in this, they are just doing their job.

The cops were not out of line here, they were working with planned parenthood.
