Los Angeles County Mask Mandate Supported By President Biden Covid Expert
Source: Deadline
The eruption of the BA.5 variant of Covid-19 has led local officials to consider reinstating the countys indoor mask mandate. Today, that revisit of the protocols was backed by Dr. Ashish Jha, President Bidens Covid coordinator, who was speaking to ABCs This Week talk show.
Los Angeles may bring back its universal indoor mask mandate on July 29 if the county continues in the Centers for Disease Controls high transmission threshold.
My view on this has been very clear, which is local jurisdictions, cities, counties, states should make decisions about mask mandates, because communities are different and their patterns of transmission are different, Jha said.
That said, CDC has very clear guidance on this as well through their COVID community levels. And the CDC recommendation is that when youre in a high zone, that sort of orange zone, you know, people wearing masks indoors is really important, and it really will make a difference.

(6,139 posts)it is insanely effective when taken at the onset of symtomps. We dont have anything like this for flu or common cold. It is criminal to restrict this medication so much.

(17,946 posts)Tamiflu is well researched. Paxlovid, less so. Problem is, when a viral infection gets started, we really don't have the technology to do more than shorten the time of acute illness and reduce symptoms. Actually curing viral infections once they get started is still the holy grail.

(129,388 posts)have been out for over 20 years. Paxlovid is still on an EUA although Pfizer just submitted their NDA request a couple weeks ago.
One of the issues that has been reported about Paxlovid (including from Fauci who had recently contracted COVID-19) is that once someone concludes the treatment, there have been reports of a rebound of symptoms. I don't know if that is a factor of how much viral load they had or what, but it seemed to have happened enough times to "make the news".
By Carolyn Crist
June 30, 2022 Anthony Fauci, MD, the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, said Tuesday that he went through a Paxlovid rebound that can occur after taking the antiviral to recover from COVID-19. The symptoms that he had after he completed the treatment were more severe than those he had at first from the coronavirus, he said.
After I finished the 5 days of Paxlovid, I reverted to negative on an antigen test for 3 days in a row, Fauci said during Foreign Policys Global Health Forum event. And then on the fourth day, just to be absolutely certain, I tested myself again, he said. I reverted back to positive.
Fauci then began a second course of Paxlovid when symptoms returned, which were much worse than the first go-around, he said. During Tuesdays event, he said he was feeling reasonably good. He later said that Paxlovid kept him out of the hospital and stopped his infection from becoming more severe when he first tested positive on June 15.
Paxlovid did what it was supposed to do, he told The New York Times. Fauci, 81, was prescribed Paxlovid due to his age, which puts him at greater risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes, according to Bloomberg News. He has been fully vaccinated and received two boosters.

The key to any of these anti-virals is to try to take them super early when you experience symptoms.

(17,946 posts)shortens the time of symptoms and infection, but it's not a cure. I get Alex's point, but there is also the issue of supply. It doesn't grow on trees. Plus, I don't think I want every Tom, Dick and Harry popping paxlovid every time they have a sniffle. Recent data shows, paxlovid has limited efficacy in vaxed and boosted populations. An important tool though in keeping those not vaxed out of the hospital.

(129,388 posts)(which may take some time) I'm sure they will be ratcheting up the manufacturing.
At some point when it's off government contract, the cost will probably be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It's good, but still a bit complicated.
Pfizer says its Paxlovid regimen may forestall resistance. Patients only take the drug for a short period and typically get a dose manyfold higher than that required to prevent the virus from replicating in cells, thereby minimizing the opportunities for the virus to mutate, says Kit Longley, a company spoke

I live in LAPD area but do go to the county side at times. Thankfully most businesses are good about it.

(10,530 posts)it really depends on voluntary compliance, the transit mandate is mostly ignored and unenforced, and this one might be it LA County goes alone
