BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) Serbias president called on NATO on Sunday to do their job in Kosovo or he says Serbia itself will move to protect its minority in the breakaway province.
The fiery televised address to his nation by President Aleksandar Vucic followed the collapse of political talks between Serbian and Kosovo leaders earlier this week mediated by the European Union in Brussels.
Serbia, along with its allies Russia and China, has refused to recognize Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence. A NATO-led intervention in 1999 ended the war between Serbian forces and separatists in Kosovo and stopped Belgrades bloody crackdown against Kosovo's majority Albanians.
-snip-
We have nowhere to go, we are cornered, Vucic said. We will save our people from persecution and pogroms, if NATO does not want to do it.

Hey dumbass, if you haven't noticed your big brother Russia is a bit occupied now. Maybe you're feeling nostalgic for WWI but I don't believe there's any Entente to bail you out this time around.

(8,020 posts)In July the Serbian leader accused Kosovo of using Ukraines plight to satisfy its own interests, comparing himself to a knockoff version of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kosovos leader to a smaller version of Ukraines Volodymyr Zelensky.
I think putin would use any excuse to "friendly invade" another "friendly" country like he did to Belarus.
NATO held off tangling with ruskies during the 90's war but if putin pulls any crap NATO should kick any rusky ass that he sends to the region.

Come to think of it, it's pretty much what Hitler said about German minorities in the Sudetenland in 1938, and Poland in 1939.
You'd think present day genocidal tyrants and wannabees could think of something original.

(6,759 posts)I asked Alexa and she gave me numbers which I rounded. It just seemed like Serbia thinks it can bully Kosovo.

(8,069 posts)That was supposed to be in response to the OP, not you.
I apologize. I certainly didn't mean to imply you in any way shape or form supported any of this.
Again, I apologize.

(4,298 posts)So depressing what happened in Sarajevo a few years later. Now we are back at that time...if we ever left it.

(54,405 posts)I hope they don't use Putin's "protection" of Russian-speaking Ukrainians as a model.
We've had enough Balkan wars in the last 100 years to last us a millenium. The Serbs should not take that as a declaration of NATO non-intervention, though. If they march in and start killing Kosovars again, NATO won't hesitate to discourage their action with "convincing" deterrence.

(51,572 posts)Like NATO did in 1999.
But NATO really should protect the Serbs in Kosovo. They are being killed, and allowing the killing to go on will allow Serbia to justify an invasion, and more bloodshed. Worse yet, Russia might get involved, unlike in 1999. If Russia ends up going into Kosovo, then NATO will not bomb, like it didn't when Russia went into Ukraine.
