Texas governor says rape victims can prevent pregnancy by taking Plan B

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said rape victims in the state can prevent pregnancies by using emergency contraception pills such as Plan B, The Dallas Morning News reported Friday.
In Texas, abortions are banned and do not include exceptions for rape or incest.
Late last month, a so-called trigger law went into effect following the Supreme Courts overturning of Roe v. Wade earlier this year. The trigger law makes it a felony to perform an abortion in the state with narrow exceptions when the pregnant persons life is at risk.
We want to support those victims, but also those victims can access health care immediately, as well as to report it, Abbott told The Dallas Morning News and KXAS-TVs Lone Star Politics in a segment obtained by the Morning News that will air on Sunday.
By accessing health care immediately, they can get the Plan B pill that can prevent a pregnancy from occurring in the first place, he added. ..................................

This is another horrible example of the #MAGA #Republican extremism that Pres Biden was referring to in his speech.

Under Greg Abbott, Texas leads the country in rape offenses while the rate of arrests for rape in our state has dropped by nearly HALF since he became governor.
What happened to him eliminating rape?

(4,369 posts)as well as abortion... I believe some Republicans consider 'Plan B' to BE abortion...
Maybe Abbott just means "until we outlaw that, too"...

(16,412 posts)I think the quote says a lot about how few fucks Abbott actually gives about the so-called "pro life" movement. If he REALLY believed abortion was murder and was motivated by a desire to protect the "unborn," he would be anti-Plan B like the rest of them.
This quote makes it clear to anyone who is really paying attention that he couldn't care less about what happens to fetuses, embryos, blastocysts, and fertilized eggs and is motivated purely by a desire to score political points. Which makes his gleeful promotion of abortion bans that much more despicable, afaic.
DemocraticPatriot
(4,369 posts)And the same goes for most of those who support abortion bans...

(16,412 posts)I have known, met, and talked to people who sincerely believe abortion at any stage of gestation, or even preventing a fertilized ovum from implanting in the uterus is, well, murder. Talking to them is trippy, because they are so passionate about their belief that every clump of cells us a "person" with a "right to life."
Politicians are a different kettle of fish. I suspect most of the politicians who make these laws are just doing it to score points with their constituents, but they wouldn't bother if they didn't know there were points there to be scored (i.e., voters who strongly object to abortion being legal).

Hes saying women dont have anything to complain about, as just cause abortion may not be legal anymore in some knuckle dragger states, all one has to do is take the morning after pill and you are good to go. In politics, you will get some quality good hearted people like Joe trying to do good things with their life and unfortunately along with them, come guys like Abbott who are good at doing bad things.

(9,998 posts)that insurance companies cover preventative treatments like birth control, HIV drugs, and STD testing. This case is likely to go to the Supreme Court, and it will give them an opportunity to rule that birth control is illegal under the ACA, or perhaps everywhere. Theyll look for any excuse. These people are true sickos.
If we can keep the House and gain at least two more Senators, we really need to pass Medicare for all, with options for all forms of reproductive healthcare including abortion. I dont know if such a massive change could get done, but our patchwork health care system is broken.

(38,428 posts)Abbot like Trump is too stupid to know. In my opinion he will lose this election because of this statement.
...I might add, perfect timing. Early September enough time for this one to get around. All around, I might add.
Abbot making a statement like this about .."Rape Victims" proves he is an elitist idiot. Most women will be
appalled by this. F**k Abbott.
But we will all see how this works out for Abbott. In November we will all know.

(33,643 posts)So, tiny bit of credit there, it's good health advice in most cases.
So, why wouldn't you?
Because maybe one or more of the following:
1) You don't know it exists.
2) You don't have the means to acquire it, which is likely esp. common in Texas.
3) If you're 12 and walk into a Pharmacy asking for Plan B, the place will probably call the cops, and maybe you aren't sure you want that to happen.
4) Texans at this point may be afraid that if they buy it, it will be tracked, and they may eventually be prosecuted for having 'had an abortion' by their fascist government.
I'm sure there's other reasons why the taking of Plan B might not happen in a rape/incest
case, but those jump to mind first.
As an aside, Plan B is also not 100% reliable.
Even though it exists, and that may HELP, we still need to keep Abortion Safe, Cheap, and LEGAL!!!
