Russian Invasion of Ukraine - Russian Forces Retreat From Lyman
Source: New York Times
Here’s what we know: The loss of the strategic rail hub in the east is particularly poorly timed for the Kremlin after its internationally derided illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions. Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman comes a day after Putin said he was annexing the region. Broken glass, blown-out tires and a crater show the violence of a deadly attack in Zaporizhzhia. At least 24 are dead, including 13 children, in an attack on a convoy in northeastern Ukraine, the authorities say. Here’s why Russia’s retreat from Lyman matters. Russia has detained the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant’s director general, its operator says. Intercepted calls reveal the Russian army in disarray. 10. The Ukrainians would probably say
"Вірний завжди" which, per Wikipedia, translates as "Always Faithful". It's also the motto for the Ukrainian Marines now.

11. Didn't know that is now the motto for the Ukr. Marines,
but I'll bet the Russian soldiers know it now quite well.

8. I hate literally rooting for a slaughter
But the evil of what Russia is engaged in forces me to want them to be slaughtered if they won't surrender.

13. It's been a slaughter now for 7 months.....
Though Ukraine has taken very heavy casualties too, they have been in general mobilization from the start, growing their forces and replacing their losses. Russia, for political reasons, not so much. They went in with 150 to 200K contract soldiers. Western estimates to date show 70 to 80K casualties. That's around HALF of the original invasion force chewed up, not counting the slow trickle in of new contract troops, Wagner Group mercs., etc., and the trickle out of deserters and refusenicks. It's so bad that the Ukrainians are now capturing Russian sailors and strategic missile troops in infantry units and manning tanks. An unmitigated shit show.
![]() So....since contract soldier moral wasn't bad enough, lets throw in conscripts, convicts (authority problems, anyone?) and recent "shanghaies", poorly trained and poorly armed since they're running out of modern kit and the professional trainers are dead, wounded or fighting on the front themselves. They can do the conscript thing now since the lines are mostly within or bordering on recently acquired "Russian territory." This debacle will be studied at length for generations on how to NOT fight a war....um...special operation. The biggest shit show since the Italians got their asses kicked in Greece in 1941. |

6. Slava Ukraini!! 🇺🇦 🌻
We thank the “Ministry of Defense” of 🇷🇺 for successful
cooperation in organizing the "Izyum 2.0" exercise. Almost all russian troops deployed to Lyman were successfully redeployed either into body bags or into 🇺🇦 captivity. We have one question for you: Would you like a repeat? Link to tweet ![]() |

14. It's a total massacre all the way from Lyman to Kreminna.
For the first time ever, I feel sorry for the Russian soldiers being slaughtered like sheep by the thousands.
And I wish the most terrible suffering and a slow death on their commanders, all the way up to Moscow. |

15. "The retreat marks a major embarrassment for Moscow ..."
From The WashingtonPost - probably behind a paywall.
KYIV — Less than 24 hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin proudly proclaimed the illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Donetsk region, thousands of his troops appear to be withdrawing from a strategic town there under Ukrainian fire.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said Saturday that its troops were withdrawing from the town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine, as Ukrainian forces surrounded it. The retreat marks a major embarrassment for Moscow, a day after it claimed swaths of eastern Ukraine as its own — in the face of widespread international condemnation. Ukrainian forces advanced on the city overnight even as Russia put on a grand ceremony and a pop concert in Moscow’s Red Square celebrating the annexation. “In connection with the creation of a threat of encirclement, the allied troops were withdrawn” from Lyman “to more advantageous lines,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Saturday. Serhiy Cherevaty, a spokesman for Ukraine’s armed forces, confirmed to The Washington Post that Ukrainian troops had entered Lyman. Despite the Kremlin statement, Cherevaty said fighting in the city was ongoing, suggesting that some Russian troops remain. Pro-Russian Telegram channels claimed Russian troops were under heavy Ukrainian attack as they tried to escape before Ukrainian forces cut off all exit routes. ... |

16. Can't help wishing they'd been surrounded and captured.
It would have been good to remove those troops (and their armaments) from the battlefield for the duration.
