KYIV, Ukraine (AP) Russian-installed authorities ordered all residents of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson to leave immediately Saturday ahead of an expected advance by Ukrainian troops waging a counteroffensive to recapture one of the first urban areas Russia took after invading the country.
In a post on the Telegram messaging service, the regional pro-Kremlin administration called on civilians to use boat crossings over a major river to move deeper into Russian-held territory, citing a tense situation on the front and the threat of shelling and alleged terror attacks by Kyiv.
Kherson has been in Russian hands since the early days of the invasion in February. The city is the capital of a region of the same name, one of four that Russian President Vladimir Putin illegally annexed last month and then put under Russian martial law. On Friday, Ukrainian forces bombarded Russian positions across the province, inching closer to a full assault on its capital as they targeted pro-Kremlin forces resupply routes across the Dnieper River.
Russian-installed officials were reported desperately trying to turn the city of Kherson a prime objective for both sides because of its key industries and major river and sea port into a fortress while attempting to relocate tens of thousands of residents.

The city is the capital of a region of the same name, one of four Russian President Vladimir Putin illegally annexed last month. The region's Kremlin-backed authorities previously announced plans to evacuate all Russian-appointed officials and as many as 60,000 civilians across the river, in what local leader Volodymyr Saldo said would be an "organized, gradual displacement."
Ukrainian officials have urged local residents to resist attempts to relocate them, with one local official alleging that Moscow wanted to take civilians hostage and use them as human shields. Putin signed a decree Wednesday imposing martial law on Kherson and three other regions in southern and eastern Ukraine he declared as Russian territory in defiance of international law.

(21,610 posts)Or does Putin have silly plans of turn Kherson into some kind of half assed Stalingrad, where propaganda trumps good military sense? He's in a bit of a fix. Ukraine neutralizing that toehold takes pressure off Odessa and the Ukrainian Black Sea coast, but Kherson is also the key to Crimea. I don't think Ukraine will take the "Stalingrad" bait. Once developed Kherson is sealed of like a cyst to wither on its own, Ukrainian focus will shift elsewhere. Perhaps driving a wedge down to the Sea of Azov, cutting the Crimean land route and splitting Russian forces. That would apply enormous pressure on Crimea, since it's only viable route of significant resupply is the Kerch Bridge.
