100,000 Russian troops killed or injured in Ukraine, US says

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia’s announced retreat from Kherson, a regional capital in southern Ukraine that it seized early in the war, and a potential stalemate in fighting over the winter could provide both countries an opportunity to negotiate peace, Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday.

He said as many as 40,000 Ukrainian civilians and “well over” 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war, now in its ninth month. “Same thing probably on the Ukrainian side,” Milley added.

“There has been a tremendous amount of suffering, human suffering,” he said at The Economic Club of New York.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday he was open to peace talks with Russia to end the war but only on the condition that Russia return all of Ukraine’s occupied lands, provide compensation for war damage and face prosecution for war crimes.

What did Russia accomplish with this idiotic invasion that made it worthwhile to kill lots of people, get clobbered by sanctions, lose important trading partners, and become a pariah?

Oh well, it may be a long while before Russia does anything like this again I hope.

He seems to see himself as having the power of a czar and can do whatever he wants. He thought he could simply roll over sovereign countries to rebuild the Russian Empire.

.....this was thought to be a huge force that indicated Russian resolve to conquer the Ukrainian army quickly and efficiently. I think that this fact puts today's figure of 100,000 casualties in perspective, particularly when one also considers the ongoing difficulty they are having with drafting anyone to go and reinforce their "special operation".

When that starts, you know it's near the end.

One shovel between 3, 1 rifle between 10, eat what you can scrounge up or starve, that sort of thing.

Russia is going to take decades to recover from this.

"Probably the same on the Ukrainian side" is what gets me most. Ukraine has not talked about their losses much, but I read once that during the initial offensive, they were losing 100/day.

Add in the civilian deaths, and it's a massive bloodbath for Ukraine. Worse than for Russia.
