Failed South Dakota House candidate arrested on rape charge following election loss
Source: NBC News
A state House candidate in South Dakota was arrested on a rape charge just days after losing his race against the incumbent candidate his mother.
Bud Marty May, 37, was arrested in Box Elder, S.D., around 4 a.m. Sunday and charged with second-degree rape, court filings said. The criminal complaint alleges May used "force, coercion, or threats of immediate and great bodily injury" against the victim.
Referring to law enforcement reports during a court hearing in the case Tuesday, the judge said officers found the victim hiding behind a bar, and she alleged May had raped her, the Argus Leader reported.
May's attorney, Matt Kinney, declined comment, saying he has not yet been provided any police reports or statements in this case.

4 people running for 2 seats? Not 2 for 2? Wait, what? South Dakota, are you okay?

(2,101 posts)I wondered what were the advantages of such a system, because it would seem like you would have less connection to your legislator. So I found this article. https://ballotpedia.org/State_legislative_chambers_that_use_multi-member_districts
Pros
Supporters of MMDs present the following arguments:
Redrawing of boundaries is not necessary, as the number of members can simply be adjusted.
There is the possibility of increasing ideological diversity and encouraging third-party candidates.[23]
Incumbents have more time to spend serving constituents.[1]
Cons
Opponents of MMDs argue the following:
It is more difficult to build cohesion and to hold individual members accountable.[23]
Plunking, the act of voting for only one candidate, can work to the benefit of a party or interest group.[14]
There is no direct connection between member and voter as with the single-member system.
MMDs may violate the principle of "one man, one vote."
MMDs occasionally conflict with Voting Rights Act regulations.
Campaigns in MMDs are more expensive.[18]
I still have questions. I don't see how it increases diversity more than a single member district. Also, how, exactly, does it contribute to having more time to serving your constituents?
Are you from SD? Do you like this system? Why? What would you consider the pros and cons?

As told to the New York Times in 1993, conservative lawyer and activist Clint Bolick stated, Clinton has not had to expend any political capital on the issue of quotas, and with her, we believe we could inflict a heavy political cost.
Because of her progressive stance, Republicans (and some liberals) voiced their concerns to President Clinton, and her nomination was withdrawn only two months after its proposal.
Descending from a long line of lawyers, Guinier often challenged Americas legal institutions, and was known for her unorthodox views on voting rights and quotas. She believed that the one person, one vote system that civil rights pioneers had championed in the 1960s, was inadequate to ensuring that minority voices were heard; she felt that ultimately, one vote entered by a person of color would not bear the same weight as a singular white vote, and would be even less impactful if they were of lower class backgrounds.

(2,101 posts)This one goes a little more in-depth about her views on MMD vs SMD. Although, I'm still not convinced that this isn't just a very good argument against gerrymandering and allowing politicians to draw the districts. Get rid of those two elements and I think you'll achieve more diversity and accountability.

(2,101 posts)into a grid, and assign a number of representatives based on population? Or would we still be using county lines and rivers and railroad tracks as the divisions?
I can understand that having multiple reps per district, I increase my likelihood of getting at least one that I agree with. Although, in red states I don't know that you'd increase it by much. I'm accustomed to losing everything by a two to one margin. I just feel like I'd end up with four Republicans who ignore me instead of one.
