Twitter announces, then quickly retracts ban on promoting other social media

Source: nbc

CEO Elon Musk posted poll asking, "Should I step down as head of Twitter?" and says he'll abide by the results.

Hours after Twitter banned users from promoting accounts on other major social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram and Truth Social, the controversial prohibition vanished from its policy page.

The new, restrictive policy came after many users, eyeing the exit doors, began posting links to their accounts on other platforms following Elon Musk's takeover as CEO of Twitter and its subsequent reinstatement of far-right accounts, suspension of journalists and mass layoffs.

"We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms," Twitter support tweeted Sunday. "However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter."

The platform and Musk were then subjected to resounding criticism for a move that seemed to defy the spirit of an internet built on free market-style cross-linking...........................

Where most companies would research and trial changes, Elon just flips the switch and sees what happens and then maybe throws a poll out to the users to decide what he should do.

It's total rich kid mentality destroying something to figure out how it works because they know can just buy another one if it breaks.

react 'in kind' ... then someone with more brains explained it to him.

Or ... there might be some sort of costly legal ramifications to this policy, not sure on that though. Maybe the lawyers jumped in and said "Yeah, that's a bad idea".

Lawyers? Musk and lawyers probably don’t mix well.

Even those somewhat sympathetic to him thought it was a dumb idea and some told him so, leaving the slavering fanboys with egg on their faces yet again when there was yet another climbdown after they vociferously supported him and what he intended to do.

They may lose patience with that schtick eventually.

And yes, it also wasn't at all thought through. Thinking's for snowflakes.

And this gives him the perfect out to not have to admit failure. Not to mention that word is the Saudi Prince said to get a CEO to run the place.

Of course everyone assumes the posted results - just slightly favoring him leaving - are legit, and it's so cute. It's his site and he literally owns many of the software developers who are here on work visas. He certainly has the ability to tell one of them, "adjust the poll results to these numbers". And nobody should trust him not to do so; like Trump he has shown repeatedly that he is a liar and not to be trusted.

But we'll see.

There's a very good chance even if he leaves but retains ownership that the platform will become useless for anti-fascists.

So Tesla drivers can't see their competitors' cars? (just kidding)

Instead of "building a better mousetrap" Musk wants to ban discussing other methods of trapping a mouse.

On edit: And who does he think is his Tesla customer base? Billy Bob MAGA-head or environmentally-conscious progressives? With every tweet he further alienates his Tesla customer base.
