Co-leader of Whitmer kidnapping plot gets 16 years in prison
Source: AP
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) The co-leader of a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years in prison for conspiring to abduct the Democrat and blow up a bridge to ease an escape. Adam Foxs sentence is the longest of anyone convicted in the plot so far, though its significantly shorter than the life sentence that prosecutors sought.
Fox, 39, returned to federal court four months after he and Barry Croft Jr. were convicted of conspiracy charges at a second trial in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were accused of organizing a wild plot to whip up anti-government extremists just before the 2020 presidential election. Their arrest, as well as the capture of 12 others, was a stunning coda to a tumultuous year of racial strife and political turmoil in the U.S.
The government said Croft offered bomb-making skills and ideology while Fox was the driving force urging their recruits to take up arms, kidnap the governor and kill those who stood in their way. But Judge Robert J. Jonker said that while Foxs sentence was needed as a punishment and deterrent to future similar acts, the governments request for life in prison is not necessary to achieve those purposes. Its too much. Something less than life gets the job done in this case, Jonker said, later adding that 16 years behind bars is still in my mind a very long time.
Jonker said he also considered the emotional baggage Whitmer has to carry due to the plot. It undoubtedly affects other people who are in public office or are considering public office, he said. They have to count the cost. That does need a forceful sentence from the court.

(2,367 posts)A Fed sentence gets at LEAST 85% served. This Republican Scum is age 39 so maybe he's out at age 52. He's already been convicted of other felonies so hopefully, he gets more.

I have become less impatient over T**** getting justice. I feel certain it's going to happen, but in such a high-profile case such as T****, they are still gathering evidence. So many took the 5th and will likely face DOJ subpoenas to pry open their traitorous mouths.

Federal prosecutors told a judge Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, that a life prison sentence would be justified for Fox, the leader of a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, saying his goal to turn the country upside down in 2020 was a forerunner of rampant anti-government extremism. (Jerry Lemenu via AP, File)

(3,417 posts)16 years for the leader of a violent insurrection sets a low ceiling. Foot soldiers in the militias will now see far lower sentences....Just long enough to bond with the
Skinheads and other Nazis inside.
I am guessing that at sentencing, the defendants shared photos of their pretty children, and invoked the Bible guy often.
I don't want to live in a totalitarian dictatorship, but in many countries, these guys would have all been summarily executed.

(8,835 posts)In the 80's, the Rocky Mountain News did an opposing pages comparison of just that.
On the left hand page, it showed some black guy, here in Denver, that robbed a 7-11 of 50 bucks, with no weapon, and got like 24 years.
On the right hand, opposing page, it showed Michael Wise, CEO of Silverado Savings here in Denver getting off scott free after fraudulently taking TWO BILLION dollars in Tax Payers money, which was the price of the Silverado Savings Bailout.....
The article told the story......Neil Bush was on the Board of Directors of Silverado, and the Judge was brought up from Texas to oversee the trial. The Texas judge made up a totally lame reason to dismiss the case against Michael Wise, THE VERY FIRST MORNING OF THE TRIAL.
Ironically, Michael Wise moved to Aspen, started a ponzi scheme that defrauded seven UBER RICH people in Aspen of their money.
He was tried and found guilty in short order, and ended up being sentenced to Leavenworth for years. He must not have realized that it was okay to fuck over the middle and lower classes and taxpayers, but NOT THE RICH.......
After Michael Wise got out of Leavenworth, he must have realized that he didn't know how to make any money, in a way that didn't involve corruption, and supposedly "jumped" off of parking Garage in Tampa?

(790 posts)I could not help but be reminded of the Lindbergh kidnapping law passed in the 1930's. It made kidnapping a serious Federal crime that also allowed Federal authorities to cross state lines to pursue suspects. Perhaps this dead brain can bone up on his reading of American history while he's in the can. (I know. Slim chance of that happening.)

(65,068 posts)That said, I think 16 years a bit light given the plan involved bombings & killing of anyone interfering.
If I heard 20 years, I think I'd find it acceptable. Not that big a difference, but planning to detonate bombs seems an exacerbating factor.

(32,645 posts)This is a just sentence, I believe. He gets 16 years in prison, or 13 would be the minimum, plus 5 years of supervised release once he gets out. If this guy doesn't get rehabilitated in prison, at least he can't be a danger to society while he's in there.

(9,155 posts)OK, Judge, but this piece of shit will be 55 years young, or younger, when he gets out.
How is a not-life-in-prison sentence supposed to deter him from plotting another terrorist act then?
That's exactly the kind of logic I'd expect from a George W. Bush appointee.
