Top Brazil Court Greenlights Bolsonaro Probe After 8 Jan Riot
Source: 1news.co.nz
"Brazilian authorities are investigating who enabled Bolsonaro's radical supporters to storm the Supreme Court, Congress and presidential palace in an attempt to overturn results of the October election. Targets include those who summoned rioters to the capital or paid to transport them, and local security personnel who may have stood aside to let the mayhem occur."

May the Brazilian authorities work swiftly and diligently to produce bona fide evidence against ex-Pres Bolsonaro so that Pres Lula can present the files to Pres Biden and Merrick Garland next February.

(510 posts)You are correct about learning a lesson from the Brazilians regarding the post-coup aftermath and the speed of their investigations. The FBI too have been methodically rounding up the lower-level Jan6 Confederates. The US system seems slower because the FBI applies for a separate arrest warrant in each US District where they have positively ID'ed an insurrectionist. And each defendant is afforded due process. Our damned slowness is securing an air-tight conviction against ex-Pres Trump.
And also, please note some elements of Brazilian law-enforcement have a reputation for "heavy-handedness" which Pres Lula is trying to fix. The US has the same problem with RW/racist law-enforcement.

This was Bolsonaro's Justice Minister - and his 'brain' (since Bolso drank his into pudding years ago).
The now-suspended Governor of Brasilia (their D.C.) then appointed Torres Security Minister - just days before the insurrection.
It was widely reported that Brasilia Police - who normally have a East Berlin-like presence in the city due to high crime rates - were noticeably absent that morning.
Fortunately, he's now under arrest. But will he talk - unless (as in Argentina's case with their assassination attempt against the VP last year) some right-wing judge intervenes to let him off the hook...
Veremos.

(21,670 posts)The slimy imp was with Bolsonaro in Orlando during the insurrection - but when he returned to Brasilia this morning, he was arrested at the airport upon arrival.
Brazilian prosecutors must have quite a bit on him.
Unlike Argentina's Macri (and to some extent Trump), Bolso wasn't able to fill the key courthouses - including the Supreme Court - with right-wing loyalists during his 4-year regime, you see.
Hence the efficiency here. Otherwise - like in neighboring Argentina - they just sit on the sedition cases until the cows come home (or one of their returns to power, whichever comes first).

(21,670 posts)Bolsonaro - like many Latin fascists - is under the impression Flawrida is an 'autonomous state'. Here's hoping he's proved wrong.
