Trump and lawyers sanctioned almost $1 million for 'frivolous' lawsuit against Hillary Clinton
Source: cnbc
A federal judge on Thursday imposed nearly $1 million in sanctions on former President Donald Trump and his lawyers for filing a frivolous lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and others.
This case should never have been brought, wrote Judge John Middlbrooks in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in his order sanctioning Trump.

One million in sanctions is indeed rare, and I'll bet the rest of the judiciary is applauding it. Trump uses the judicial system for his theatrics and to delay punishment: there is no reason to permit this.

(1,922 posts)The judge awarded Dolan $50,000 from four of the attorneys last November.
Dolan was the first defendant in Trump's lawsuit to request sanctions, and the first to get them.
This latest round included Trump himself in the sanctions, though, which is new.

(2,852 posts)Post #5, to which I was responding, said that this million is just the beginning, and that the other defendants would be getting more than that.
At least that's how I read the post.
And I was pointing out that such is not the case. This sanctions order is fees for all the attorneys involved in the litigation except the Dolan fees that were already disposed of.
The "unfortunately" was directed at the fact that this is not the beginning of a series of fee awards. It's the one and only. At least for this particular case.

(16,494 posts)Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start, Middlebrooks wrote.
No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim.
Where the hell does the Orange Hellbeast find these crackpot lawyers to file all these garbage suits for him that "no reasonable lawyer would have filed"? There seem to be an awful lot of them!

I know this, and I don't understand it one bit. That such people can be intellectually capable of getting through law school and yet so...intellectually limited in so many ways. I. Just. Don't . Get. It.

(129,376 posts)They are working on the most egregious of them (whose license is currently suspended in NY and D.C.). We'll find out some time in Feb./Mar. when an Appeals Court rules on the D.C. recommendation.
The Kraken team leader is awaiting a TX decision related to discipline that could lead to disbarment.

(129,376 posts)where the lower rung ones don't or never will have the resources of that "top tier" to fight those types of punitive measures, and will effectively be out of business upon sanctions and suspensions, even if their licenses are still intact. As more and more face the music and it makes the news, others will think twice about tempting fate and giving it a go.
As it is, a number of them without the celebrity "names" HAVE been disciplined in several states but you have to dig for it (e.g., this)
Only reason why Ghouliani is an un-dead walking zombie is because of his past positions as a US Attorney for SDNY and mayor, but he is effectively neutered pending a disbarment.
But after him, Jenna Ellis will be next along with Cleta Mitchell and others.

(36,827 posts)The idea shysters like this get as far as they have is a tragedy even before they go to work for Trump. Sidney Powell has yet to be disbarred and may still not. It seems the biggest case they have on her is claiming other lawyers were on her cases without their permission. Wisconsin declined to even sanction her, and GQP cretins are still sending her money and will probably send even more if and when she gets disbarred. Evidently theres money to be made in this sort of bullshittery

(129,376 posts)is a long and drawn out process (usually for a reason - due process).
You'll note of all the crap that Ghouliani was involved in, there was one particular set of legal cases he was associated with - those here in PA - that were used as a jumping off point to charge him for malfeasance egregious enough to need discipline, with the remedy being disbarment.
He was pretty much the legal ringleader (along with Eastman) and the others were "litigation support". I remember something like 61+ cases that were filed (including appeals) - both at the federal and state courts - that were related to overturning the election.
This article had some of the stats of the cases (and where they were filed) - https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/politics/elections/2021/01/06/trumps-failed-efforts-overturn-election-numbers/4130307001/

(18,640 posts)Maybe they'll be less apt to take up suits against everyone from Chuck Shumer to Rosie O'Donnell.
"I'll sue" is a regular tactic when Trump get humiliated by his own actions.
Maybe better to make sure lawyers were unwilling to sue everyone Trump doesn't like.
